Intresting project, you have a new subscriber. 😁 I prefer using a soldering iron for soldering SMD caps and resistors, down to 0403 size. First, I clean both solder pads with solder wick and apply fresh solder to one of them. Then I put some flush(optional, see below) on the pads and I pick up the component with tweezers and reheat the pad with the fresh solder, positioning one side of the cap into the molten solder. Once it solidifies again, I release the tweezers, ensuring the cap is flush with the board. Finally, I solder the other side, and that is it.

Flux is handy, but in many cases, fresh solder with flux inside is sufficient if you use solder iron and don't heat the solder for too long (<10s). Solder can become dry or ineffective if heated for an extended period, making it almost impossible to solder new components with it. That's why it's almost always a good idea to remove old solder and use fresh solder every time you replace a part. If the solder doesn't flow or shine anymore, it has deteriorated significantly, likely due to oxidation. Heat can speed up this process rapidly, causing copper and other additives to become burnt or oxidized over time and then solder will not flow onto the part anymore, and you will get a bad solder joined. Success with the project and soldering. 👍

neat project! have you considered using something like a leap motion which could give a bunch more pose information for training?
