Thomas Taugher's story on why Film School was a waste!

I go to film school (screenwriting concentration) & think about dropping out every day. I feel like I could be learning so much more just by writing because everything I have to do for school leaves so little time for actually writing.

Having spent sometime in film school my self, everything he’s saying is true but I feel I can add one “good” he should have said, on top of making connections. And that is having a formal introduction to the knowledge of filmmaking and that the school can help make you accountable for your progress.
To clarify, if your the kind of person who finds it hard get motived to work on your own or works better when you have groups of people around you to build off of then film school can work wonders for you!
If you live and work in a city or town that doesn’t really have an industry, going to film school will put you ahead of a lot of the people who do have the passion to make films in your area but just end up wasting everyone’s time because they don’t have a complete grasp of what they are doing. Their passion is enough to get things made but not enough to study what they need to know before hand to make people give them the time of day. If you study and show that you can produce good work, the connections will follow. It call comes down to how you want to study and where you want to put your money towards.
I just wanted to defend that film school isn’t only for connections and that it can work great for some people and not others.
At the end day, learning to produce great work is what matters and should be the reason you wanted to make films in the first place. Your REAL hurtle in getting a career isn’t in making as much friends as possible but in people taking you seriously. This starts with deciding where your goals truly aline.

I can definitely see how people would say it's a waste but I also feel it depends on the person and the school.

I love when people who went to film school talk about why you don't need film school. Super inspiring

Can tell you by experience. film school is useless, the waist of time and money you get in there is just insane. Just take the film school money, put it in gear and start learning by shooting and when the 3 years (equivalent to a film school degree) have past you'll have gear and a list of clients that you'll not have geting out of film school!

I totally agree with everything - this is similar to my experience when I was getting my BFA in photography and doc film. My professors were amazing but the school as a whole wasted a lot of my time.

Depends what kind of film school? I will now be able to learn about coloring, shooting with red and arri etc. Things you practice with, and withactually people who are qualified to learn other people. Ill now learn from free lancers already doing jobs in film industry

I keep noticing that directors, screenwriters and cinematographers that work in Hollywood movies all went to film school though. Stop this bullshit of the film school a waste of time

I like how Thomas said the pros of film school is that he has people he talks to to land gigs he met in film school- pretty much the only positive I got out of going to "film" school & when you're building up that's huge to have a network like that. It depends on you & what you want to do. Film school helped me get a network but I learned more on set and outside of the classroom.

Online is great, but you don’t have that equipment and other things to practice... and get corrected critique etc (like on set, not seeing the final result)

I bet many students never, never, never find jobs in films. Selling coffee is the next step.

What a strange curriculum. Of course you go to film school to study filmography, but it ads all other classes as well? To hell with that.

there are film schools that deal more with the practicals, why didnt u opt for that one

I agree. Degrees in the arts are not necessary.

Dear everyone, GO TO FILM SCHOOL. Try it out. Its not about making connections, but simply having a group of classmates/a club dedicated to film that will HELP YOU. As someone who hadnt made a film prior to college, i was terrified and had no one that would act in it. But going to film school really taught me to be self reliant as youre pretty much doing everything yourself AND you have aspiring actors and other filmmakers all at your disposal. Think of film school as a resource. However, do not go to a college that you cant afford, as living at home while going to a city college with an average program will suffice. Try it out for a year at least, i beg of you.

I went to a film school that taught me the fundamentals--I still use them today. It was also a liberal arts school, which helped broaden my mind about art, language, history, religion, philosophy etc. and taught me how to communicate and write better, which are all essential to my art today as well. Yeah, you can learn the technical stuff yourself online, but getting a good education can help your art BE better. Also it was a cheap school, which was a plus :)

I appreciate what he’s saying, it’s a tricky one. The money is insane (obviously depends where you go...). But personally I found film school so worth it, my professors instead of stopping me from going out and getting paid gigs, encouraged it! One of them even got me work on Peaky Blinders! It’s easy to tar every film school with the same brush but honestly it is what you make of it. If you go, work hard and manage your time, it can be very worthwhile. This is in no ways a dig at what Thomas is saying, I completely completely hear his point, I just hope that people thinking about going don’t just see this video (especially the title) and think I’ll give that a miss. You can find a school that suits you, not every school is the same.
