The true stories about Bruce Lee are always more interesting than the fiction- why? Because the truth humanizes him and makes him more relatable.

My perspective on Bruce Lee is that he was a gifted martial artist and actor who trained harder than most of us ever have. However, he was still human.

It would be foolish to think Bruce Lee didn’t have off days. There had to be days when he had the flu, or a cold, or a training injury. Maybe he just had an argument with his wife or he was worried about something going on with his kids. Maybe he was exhausted from his normal routine. We know he had headaches and was sometimes tired. Any of these things could lead to a day when he wasn’t as strong or fast as normal. He might have been distracted or had a shorter fuse than normal. Nobody is without weakness or is the best all of the time.

It is also possible to run into somebody whose strengths are an unfortunate match for your weaknesses. This is why many of us, including Bruce Lee, have trained in more than one art. It is why many of us have supplemented our martial arts with weight training and cardio work. It tends to eliminate some weaknesses and reduce the severity of others. I tend to believe it is impossible to eliminate all human weaknesses. I think a martial artist should try to be aware of their remaining weaknesses and to manage them.

I admire Bruce Lee. I have even been inspired by him. I don’t revere him or worship him as a god.

Hadn't heard about Bruce keeping his hands behind his back. Interesting detail. According to Daniel Lee, they were in the kitchen admiring some new 16 oz gloves Bruce had bought when he suddenly said let's test them out and they cleared the chairs and went at it. I think I recall Inosanto saying Lee didn't get hit so much as almost hit or grazed by the glove's surface when he unloaded a flurry of over a dozen punches that, in his defense, were controlled but definitely meant business. Afterwards, when asked about what happened, Dan kept silent until Bruce pressed him and told him he knew it was wrong but couldn't help himself—his temper got the better of him. Which is the key here. Lee knew his major flaw was his terrible temper and it's my personal theory that he would test it by ALLOWING himself to get hit to see how he'd react because, as was said in the video, he didn't like to be touched and, as students like Inosanto and DeMile and Golden have said, they never saw Bruce get hit. NEVER.
One of his students—might've been Herb Jackson—said they were practicing a boxing drill where Bruce was ducking punches, when for some reason he brought his head up INTO the punch…almost intentionally. The student thought he was dead because Bruce clearing wasn't happy about getting caught, but, thankfully, nothing happened. In another incident, British journalist Ted Thomas, who'd done some boxing in his youth, was asked to so some friendly "sparring" on the couch where their interview was taking place and, when his guest dropped his guard, popped him and cut his lip open. Again, Bruce wasn't happy but controlled his temper. And again it was something that shouldn't have happened to someone so clearly skilled, unless, perhaps, he did it on purpose. Which brings me to one more story: A friend of mine took lessons from Oakland student Howard Williams whose classes consisted of full-contact sparring. One night, one of the students nailed another one good—REAL good—which made Howard go, "Ooooo…if you had hit Bruce like that I'd have feared for your life!" which made everyone go, "Wow…Bruce got HIT?" Howard said, "Yeah, and you did NOT wanna be the one who did it 'cause Bruce only got hit if he WANTED to get hit." "Why would he do that?" they asked. "So he'd have an excuse to open up on you." I rest my case, lol.
Oh, and I could be misremembering, but I think Bruce showed the courtesy of placing a chair behind the clothing store guy when he one-inch punched him—unfortunately, the chair fell backwards and THEN the guy went into the clothing rack, lol. And the follow-up is that when Dan returned on another day, the guy told him, "Don't you EVER bring your friend back here again!"

Story sounds completely authentic. Dan Inansonto has never struck me as a teller of tall tales but even more, when you hear enough stories of Bruce from such a variety of sources, in many cases people who really didn’t know each other, a pattern in Bruce’s personality emerges that is consistent throughout.
If you’ve known people in life who could truly fight and sometimes did (as in street fighting) but were otherwise highly functioning then these stories seem even more authentic because these types are relatively rare but share some unique qualities in common.
Bruce had to be an overwhelming presence to those in his inner circle.
This story is even better in its historical context. Kung fu, with all its mythical connotations, was more or less emerging into the American culture and I can only imagine the first impression from this dude that received his introduction to kung fu through a random physical encounter with none other than Bruce Lee and his seemingly mystical one inch punch.

To a modern day person it is a straightforward assault. Back in those days, Bruce would have been considered to have exercised a lot of restraint before giving the guy what was coming to him. Different time, different culture. I wonder if Dan would still share that story with a modern audience if he hadn't told it before?
