Does Carbon Offsetting Make You Carbon Neutral?

This little video was inspired by adverts I've seen popping up all over the place. It aims to delve a little deeper into the way offsets work to see if companies should be claiming they're carbon neutral or not.

Please bear in mind that this video covers a lot in a short time, however, the topic is obviously very complicated. Much of what I say is a drastic oversimplification to make the topic (hopefully) easier to understand. Definitely have read up, and stay tuned for some more content on the issue.

All of the footage in this video is free stock provided by Pexels, Videezy, and Pixabay. The music is also no copyright produced by Podington Bear and Purple Planet Music.

If you want to reduce overall GHG emissions, do not blame Shell, or BP, or Chevron. Pedal your way to the office, spend your holidays less than 100 miles from home, read books (instead of streaming films and YouTube videos), do not use A/C and, ideally, have no kids.

Is the idea: There are only a set amount of carbon credits each year and if you buy extra credits from one business, then they would not be able to pollute as much in that year (assuming that they don’t buy extra credits of their own if any are left in circulation that year), and if someone goes then over the carbon limits they would pay a fine?

Wouldn’t it be efficient to just permanently shut down most big polluters; and impose high taxes on all fossil fuels that we rely on now but plan to phase out; and provide a heavily subsidised green power (not just solar, but miniature hydro, geo thermal, and kinetic too).

You can plant more trees for the atmosphere but that won’t repair the direct damages done by logging/mining/fracking/etc

If it was all this bad it shouldn’t be a choice to do the right thing or going without - Find the Third Way.

I don't understand your equation... if the airplane omits 1 unit of Carbon, and you install wind turbines which omits -1 unit of Carbon (i.e. reduces it), it's 1 - 1 = 0. You are also reducing the need for a coal powered station so surely you would be reducing even more Carbon in the atmosphere.

Let's say I emit 1 unit of carbon from my annual energy consumption, which was generated by burning coal. Additionally, I do one annual flight in which I emit 1 unit of carbon. At the end of the year I offset 2 units of carbon emissions. This offset is invested in solar power panels, and my offset is responsible for producing clean energy equivalent to not emitting 2 units of carbon during a year. Here, I'm responsible for 2 units of carbon, but not on your example. It's basic maths... like, really basic, primary school maths.

If I decide to offset my full carbon footprint, with your method you can still come up with an extra unit of carbon to be offset. It doesn't work like that. The power station is BAU and you're adding your flight to the carbon contribution - that's what you're responsible for.
