After over 20 years of teaching the language, and even more years of watching movies and sitcoms and documentaries and youtube and what not, an upper-intermediate student questions the way I pronounce this word with a ch sound (as in 'fortune') rather than a t (as in 'tune'). I explain that both are acceptable and remark that I even believe that my way is more prevalent in north America and the one with t is rather quaint and more typical of the British accent. I then confidently look it up in the Encarta dictionary to corroborate this, only to get a nasty surprise. No matter what dictionary or resource I consult, it's the same! My variant is hardly ever even recorded anywhere. O the horror of it! And this video was the last nail into its coffin. My confidence in my proficiency is now entirely shaken. What I once regarded as a robust and exquisitely built grand edifice of linguistic knowledge crumbled before my incredulous eyes and its rubble now lies at my feet....

Hi Rachel! I noticed that the "u" sound in the "tu" syllable (the stressed one) seems to be made up of two sounds, like if it was a dipthong. Could you clarify this to me please? Thanks so much, you're great!

I need to use "negative" and "positive" a lot every day to describe the results to my colleagues. For example, negative results, positive findings or we are waiting for the final negative reports, etc. Sometimes, my people stare at me in widely opened eyes because they do not understand what I am saying. Please give one or two videos on pronunciation of "negative" and "positive", as well as sample sentences. Thanks a lot.

This was the only difficult word for me to pronounce. The main reason for this difficulty was that "I forget to flap the last T SOUND". I pronounced it as "TRUE T SOUND" ... Two TRUE T sounds in one word made it difficult for me to pronounce it smoothly. I do know the rules of "Flapping T sounds" but I didn't think about that. "opportunITY" T is sandwiched between " I & Y". So thanks a lot coz now rocking and rolling towards American pronunciation a lot. ❤❤❤

For the word of the week I suggest the word TWO (number). I've heard many times non-native speakers pronouncing "T" in the word TWO differently than native speakers.
