An introduction to the first Greek philosopher, Thales of Miletus.

Ancient Greek philosophy dawned in the city of Miletus, with the intellectual contributions of Thales (fl. 585 B.C.). In this video, Dr. Foxwede details the Milesian's view that everything is made from water, his flat earther views, and generally his intellectually daring break from Greek mythology.

Perhaps none as ingenious, as Thales of Miletus.
Our first natural philosopher of antiquity.
In his search for universality,
saw water as arche primordiality.
He set the natural world off as separate from the divine.
Comprehensible without reliance on supernatural design.
He secularized creation myths and was wise to see,
dry land and life emerging from the sea.
Earth floating on water – was his devotion.
Explaining earthquakes as caused by wavery commotion.
Floating in a cosmos of circular motions.
Surrounded by ever distant oceans.
In addition – a marvelous mathematician.
He offered a way to measure the distance to ships ashore.
And advised navigators to steer by Ursa Minor.
Of the Pyramids’ dimensions - he made calculations.
And of solstices and solar eclipses, astute predictions.
Of geometric laws he offered five propositions.
Though ever renowned for the theorem of his name.
For which he belongs in our Hall of Fame.
