I think you treat this with a lot of balance. It’s interesting too I’ve lived and taught English in Korea for a while and one thing I’ve noticed is that in a homogenous country you have less awareness yet less racial tension. Whereas the opposite is true in a diverse country. For example I taught high school one year and one of the students told a horrifically racist joke which included the N word and the entire class loved it. When I corrected him my Korean co-teacher played it down saying it was a joke and it was fine. However in that school there were 0 cases of racial bullying....because there were no other races. I’m sure in America that situation would have been very different and that student would have lost a lot of friends that day. Yet that American school probably would have more racial tension and bullying. Diversity’s a bit of a two edged sword in that way. It’s our desire that it teaches people to regard others of different backgrounds as equally valued and respected, yet it will also expose a lot of hatred that would have otherwise gone unseen.
