My Dad was a B.A.R. man with the 4th Marine Div. on Iwo Jima. I learned about the attributes of this rifle at a young age, and how fortunate he felt being issued one.

This was my grandfather’s primary weapon during the Battle of the Bulge. He sustained four gunshot wounds and was eventually moved to a hospital in England which was then bombed during a raid by the Luftwaffe. He also took part in the D-Day invasion. He received a Silver Star, Bronze Star, and Purple Heart with oak leaf clusters. Folks, his nerves were shot. He came home to Harlan County Kentucky and started drinking. He opened fire in a movie theater. My grandmother said she wouldn’t marry him unless he stopped drinking, so he did. He went on to launch a business that employed over a hundred people. He sold and retired in 2004. In 2009 I spoke with him on the telephone saying I’d be home on a particular date in four months time. He repeated the date and said ok. I got back to Kentucky on that date, sat with him and had him laughing again. He passed an hour later.

The USMC gave it to big Marines becauseof its weight. But once they gained expertise in island fighting they issued it to smaller Marines bevause it drew fire immediately. The smaller Marine was a snaller target.
BAR men had detailed squad riflemen to carry magazines.

You were a target to the Gemans if you were carrying one. They hated that weapon.

I remember reading a book by a Marine in the WWII Pacific War and he described the BAR used for covering fire in combat against Japanese positions . In those days, the average Marine would have been armed with an M1, and they had just one or two BAR in the squad for automatic fire.

The BAR man was a priority target of the Japanese infantry man. My father hated to use it, but it was powerful.

My Grandfather was a BAR man in the Marines on Okinawa. He told me it would nearly cut a man in half when hit with a burst. At the time he was 5' 9 and weighed 130 lbs. Graduated high school in 1944. Mowing soldiers down a year later. They don't breed men like that today it seems.

My grandfather carried one of these across North Africa and on to the beaches of Salerno with the 36th Infantry Division

One thing that made me really like the BAR was how it looked like an oversize infantry rifle but with a long magazine sticking out below

Biggest issue was that ridiculously small 20 rd mag

That rifle must be a beast to actually shoot. I have a 7.62x51 AR10 and even that hits me super hard. Bruises my shoulder, I couldn't even imagine blasting 20 rounds of 30-06 in single fire let alone full auto fire.

Clyde Barrow (Bonnie and Clyde) said it was his favorite gun. He cut down the stock and barrel. We called it the "Whippet" because he could whip it into action quickly.

In training before the Navy sent me to 'Nam, we got to play with a number of weapons, including the M16, a Tommy Gun and a BAR. Fun! But I recall the instructors and everybody I talked to actually called it a b.a.r, not a bar.
