"A birch tree stood in the field" (or "A Birch-Tree in a Field Did Stand") is an old Russian folk song performed by Nikolay Gres (dramatic tenor) and the Alexandrov Red Army Choir (with English subtitles). This song was first published in 1790 as a popular traditional Russian dance song. There are lots of versions of the lyrics known.
Music arrangement by A.V.Alexandrov, folk lyrics.

This rare and historic program was filmed on location in the former Soviet Union. The brilliant ensemble consisted of about 200 entertainers including a choir and choreographic troupe, who traveled the front lines, entertaining Soviet troops by performing more than 1500 concerts during World War II. This musical film brings to life the essence of Russian music and performance with spectacular singing, dancing and acrobatics.

The shooting of this clip was made in Kurkino, near Moscow by a German operator, former operator of Hitler, in 1965.

Germany-USSR, Gosteleradio and Bertelsmann Fernsen Produktion (München), 1965.

LYRICS:

TRANSLATION OF THE LYRICS

A birch tree stood in the field,
A curly one stood in the field,
Luli-luli, it stood,
Luli-luli, it stood.

Refrain:
Tarry-barry, rastabarry
White snows fell, gray hares ran out,
The hunters went out, they let all their dogs out,
And scared a pretty girl!..
You girl stop! Stop, stop, stop!..
Beauty, sing a song with us! Sing, sing!
My chuvill, chuvill! Chuvill-navil, vil-vil
Another miracle, the first miracle, my miracle homeland!
Another miracle, the first miracle, my miracle homeland!

There is no one to break the birch down,*
There is no one to pluck the curly one,
Luli-luli, to break down,
Luli-luli, to pluck.

Refrain:

I will go to the forest for a walk,
And will break the white birch down,
Luli-luli, will go for a walk,
Luli-luli, will break down.

Refrain:

* - "breaking the birch tree down" reffers to an ancient Russian ritual about bending birch branches to the ground and tying them with colored ribbons to the grass. That ritual associated with life and procreation. It was implemented by ladies only. Thus, a birch tree symbolizes a young girl here.

I haven't heard this song in nearly 40 years. As soon as I saw the title in English I recognized it. And even though I haven't spoken Russian since I was 12, I immediately remembered the words, had a little tear I had to wipe. I used to be fluent in Russian. I'm Hungarian by the way.

I saw The Red Army Ensemble at the Empress Hall in London in the '50s and this song was always my favourite from the lp that my mother bought us after that.

I just remembered that I have a version of this song on an old Red Army Choir record! I’m not sure where it came from, but my grandpa brought it to me one day. I’m pretty sure he found it in Bulgaria, where a lot of his friends have all sorts of antiques and they hand them out to him for free lol. The record doesn’t have a date on it, but I’m assuming it’s old because it smells very musty and the cover has yellowed a bit. Anyways, this song was one of my favorites on the record. I love the energy and this guy’s deep, powerful voice! I am so glad I discovered Red Army Choir nearly two years ago. They mean so much to me and their music is so fantastic. I’ve listened to over 200 of their songs and I keep finding new ones to this day! The page on Spotify is still active, even, which makes me very glad! I’m so glad that you keep this channel up and running! Long live this fantastic choir! 💖💖💖
