Donald Trump, Jr. said his father “represents a bright and beautiful future for all,” during a speech on Monday at the 2020 Republican National Convention.
“Imagine the life you want to have, one with a great job, a beautiful home, a perfect family. You can have it!” he said.
President Donald Trump and speakers at the Republican National Convention sought to paint a positive picture of his widely criticized handling of the coronavirus pandemic, with cameos by frontline workers and praise for his leadership in the race to develop a vaccine.
“These are the incredible workers that helped us so much with the covid,” Trump said in remarks from the White House alongside workers from police officers to nurses and truck drivers. “We can call it many different things from China virus -- I don’t want to go through all the names because some people may get insulted -- but that’s the way it is.”
Trump has been criticized for failing to move more forcefully to combat the virus that has killed more than 177,000 people in the U.S. and for resisting advice from public health officials such as the need to wear masks in public places. Earlier Monday, he said the virus is “going to be fading” and ridiculed Democratic rival Joe Biden for saying he’d shut down the economy again if needed.
The president’s claims to success were echoed by convention speakers, including Dr. G.E. Ghali, an oral surgeon and coronavirus patient from Louisiana, who thanked Trump for a response to the pandemic that Democrats criticize as woefully inadequate. It has killed more than 175,000 people in the U.S.
