The End of Bonny Street Market Blackpool

Traders at the popular Bonny Street Market in Blackpool were recently given a month's notice to move out of the site by the powers from above. I do not know much more about it at this time, but I expect the site may be turned into extra car parking space during the development of Blackpool Central.

I'm all for progress and change - but you need to balance these against completely ripping the culture, atmosphere and tradition out of a place. Particularly at this moment in time, I've given up believing in common sense, truthfulness and sanity. Suffice to say that if these businesses were only given one month notice, then that is a despicable decision by Blackpool Council and/or the landlord(s); even more so given the suffering, both emotional and financial, that we've all endured over the past two years.

Such a shame Stephen, Bonny Street Market is part of the core of Blackpool, a delightful, 'cheap and cheerful' experience. What is Blackpool Council trying to create, 'Belgravia-by-sea'? They got off on the wrong footing with that one a long time ago, so many of the beautiful, classic old buildings of yesteryear have already been demolished! I expect my fish and chips, a rummage round the market, and a bit of saucy banter when I visit Blackpool, isn't that what visiting there has always been about?

It's an end of an era, however markets are closing up and down country, blame drastically changing shopping habbits, Amazon, eBay, Poundland etc . In 2022 less and less people want to wonder about an open air market.
Regeneration is absolutely essential to keep Blackpool moving forward also this area is badly overdue a major revamp it will improve the look of the town and help attract more investment spin offs.
Hopefully the stallholders can find other employment, it can't be easy making money markets nowadays.

Used to visit the market in the 80's as a child, there was a guy selling XR7 car polish. He had a bonnet from an old mini and would apply the polish, the douce it in lighter fuel and set it alight, to "show" how the polish protected the bonnet, bought some as a kid, even though I had no car!

I think markets generally are disappearing everywhere, our local one which had been founded way back went. The market hall got converted to a craft one, now dead most of the week and the outside to a car park which is being built on. I think the rise of the discount stores contributed. The fruit and veg stalls still seem to thrive though.

In this day on age, I can’t find it in me to say I’m not surprised!

Why would Blackpool council for one second give a toss about market traders?

I have nothing but a feeling it’s all about the backhander!!!

I really loved this mini-market as it was always bustling with customers and fearsome female stall traders but my favourite stand was on the left at the end with personalised trowels and forks etc and extendable hoses at dirt cheap prices.

Thanks for the report. This is truly shocking. Who is responsible for this? Bonny Street market is vibrant market. The amount of businesses there confirms that. These are people's livelihoods. You need to visit it when it is open Stephen. All empty open air markets look like that when shuttered up. There is no sign of the new development starting yet traders given only 1 month's notice. Disgraceful.

It's such a shame for those people, The Council are quick to take their money and then show no compassion by giving them 1 months notice to get out. Have they given them somewhere else to ply their trade

Great video Sir, I can’t believe you haven’t ventured what I’m guessing was once a popular market? I know the traders obviously knew what was coming but I guess that one months notice was still a shock to some. When is the old police station coming down? That was a proper walk on the wild side video! Keep up the fantastic work Sir and stay safe.
