In managing a boutique hotel, I once had to terminate a highly skilled chef because of his occasional tardiness, despite his culinary excellence and positive guest feedback. The hotel's owner was convinced by a management company to outsource operations for a percentage of profits, which led to chronic understaffing. Consequently, I spent a significant portion of my time scrambling to find temporary workers willing to work for minimum wage until their first paycheck. This situation severely impacted service quality and staff morale, underscoring the urgent need for better compensation and more flexible policies in the industry.

The problem i had was needing a good team and then being told to fire people that were integral members of the team. If the industry paid more i could be more restrictive. You can not fire a customer service superstar for being 5 minutes late every day. The management companies, oh boy, there really is not enough money to go around to start (hotels have high operating costs) then a shark contacts the owner and offers a responsibility free operation for a percentage. Hotels who use them have given up on caring about anything and are passionate about not paying people enough to even come to work. In this sinerio you never have employees and a third of your job is trying to find a person with a pulse to work for 2 weeks until the first paycheck. 😊 This is just in my limited 12 year hotel career.
