You can put clear packing tape “inside out” around base of eggplant. This prevents ants from crossing.

Good tips, thank you. A little late but for anyone new here, if you're going to try vaseline, you will also need to do the bases of the trellis supports and anything else touching the plant because literally everything is a highway for ants.

If you want more airflow don't plant basil around your eggplant.
Eggplants are perennials so this one isn't near the end of it's life. Seams to be in it's first year so it can ger much older.
