This movie actually has an even deeper connection with Mara Wilson who played Matilda. Her mom got diagnosed with cancer and died before the premiere. Danny Devito and Rhea Perlman who play Mr and Mrs Wormwood are a real-life married couple and took care of Mara during filming. Devito(who was also the director) even showed her mom the final cut of the movie so she got to watch the movie before she died. He never actually told Mara he did this until years later.

Danny DeVito and Rhea Pearlman looked after her in real life when her Mother was fighting cancer. DeVito even showed her Mother the movie before she passed away.

There’s something always slightly touching about the mom in the end- she knew the right thing was to let Matilda stay with Ms Honey who could nurture her. I always liked they added the line about her never understand her daughter! Deep down even bad moms can make the right decision for their kids

Fun fact: Matilda parents are actually married in real life.
Edit June 2020: lol y’all are wild. Yes, both were on and off these last few years and are officially separated. They have confirmed they have no intention of divorce as it’s till death do us part. They have 3 children and yes they did take Mara (Matilda) in for a while when her mom was battling cancer.

It's sad to think how perfect of an ending it was for Matilda in the movie, but in Mara Wilson (girl who plays Matilda)'s life her mom was diagnosed with breast cancer during filming for this movie and she died shortly after :( I will always love this movie❤️

I remember in the book's original ending Matilda didn't need adoption papers and her dad was like "if she wants to stay then she can stay" he and her mother legit didn't give a fuck, also while her brother was never a bully to her in book but more of an innocent child he was the only one waving goodbye to Matilda.
