Alan Turing breaks Enigma

Alan Turing was a pioneering British mathematician, logician, and cryptanalyst, widely regarded as the father of modern computer science. Born on June 23, 1912, Turing's work laid the foundation for much of the technological progress that followed in the 20th century. One of his most influential contributions was the development of the Turing machine, a theoretical construct that became a fundamental model of computation and algorithmic processes. The Turing machine provided a framework for understanding the limits of what can be computed, influencing the design of actual computers.
Turing is also famous for his work during World War II, where he played a key role in breaking the German Enigma code. His efforts at Bletchley Park significantly shortened the war and saved countless lives. His innovations in cryptography and the development of early computing machines, such as the Bombe, were pivotal in the Allies' victory.

Then you had the problem of what to do once you broke the code, so the Germans didn’t know you have broke the code

If a movie sparks you to investigate more; it’s done its job. This movie does that.

I've seen a replica of the Enigma machine up close when I toured the International Spy Museum in DC. It was an ingenious piece of work for it's time. Cracking the code enabled the Allies not only to know what the Germans were planning ahead of time but it shortened the war and potentially saved thousands of lives.

They created the top secret term ‘Ultra’ for the work of Bletchley Park which is still used to this day by British forces; especially the Royal Navy!

The genius behind these people is amazing. What was done to Turing, unforgivable. We as a species suck and I pray we never colonize anything but our own planet.

For those wondering the movie's called The Imitation Game.

Yes Poland broke the code, Bletchley Park industrialised the process. You couldn't just "break" Enigma anyway. You can crack the principle, but the point about Enigma is that it wasn't just one code, it was a way of creating infinite, non repeating codes. You might well "crack" the code for 9.23 am on the 15th of May 1940, but the very next message will have a different code, and so on ad infinitum. What was needed, and what Bletchley Park provided, was a way of breaking into that chain.

she went from pirate life to breaking the Germans

Crazy that even with modern technology and AI, breaking the enigma code would STILL be next to impossible. But these guys did it with the computing power of a modern $1.00 calculator.

Thank God for the Golf, Cheese and Chess Society. Absolute brilliance from the crew at Bletchley Park.

Using common words likely to be in the messages had long been how they were cracking it. He didn't come up with it. What he came up with was a way to crack the messages faster so that they messages weren't obsolete by the time they were able to read them.

I love the fact that 100% of all of us are watching this short on a very advanced Turing Machine😂❤

Enigma was cracked by Bletchley park in 1940, the brits didn't need to go to war

The only two words that you need to know in german to break Enigma code...

when this first came out i had only heard about the code breakers and so on, Part way through the film as theyre trying to figure things out i said to myself "Why not just search for one word like "Hitler" and then you can go from there" never felt smarted

Searching for known words is obvious in code-breaking, Turing was more like the character Hugh, and the machine was an improvement on another design.
But still a fun movie ... except for the sad parts.

I think this is an example of hackers call social engineering

I feel like this is an extreme oversimplification because my first idea for a cipher like this would be "what are the common words?"

These historical people are as smart or smarter than me, so they would've thought of this sooner than me.
