There are SO many books out there when it comes to learning how to make sewing patterns, so I’ve put together a list of my 5 favourites! They range from drafting books, fitting books and a grading book. I know it can feel overwhelming when you’re first getting started, so I hope this gives you a clearer idea of what books I find useful! 🫶🏽 Comment below if you have any books you’d recommend.

It’s great that you are self taught. I am self taught in many things including sewing.
I would like to point out that being only self taught there is no point of reference as to what it would be like to be trained professionally, and not just learning from books by professionals. I love learning from books but sometimes we don’t know what we don’t know so it’s good to keep an open mind. We can never compare to those who learn and work in the industry professionally, whatever skill we apply this concept to.
Thank you for your videos. It’s been interesting following your sewing journey. 😊

The first two books I have seen floating around the sewing community, but never saw the insides. So thank you for showing them! I am more intrigued to get them or put them on my wishlist for christmas for others to gift it to me ehehe

I do have the Helen Joseph Armstrong and the Winifred Aldrich, after watching your video, I decided to go to Helen Joseph one and I find it easier than the Winifred Aldrich and am enjoying it now. Sewing can put you off, so thank you for the motivation to proceed. I want to make a few skirts.

Brilliant, thanks for sharing. Grading is something I've struggled with and finding good information, so this book recommendation is fab.

Another very informative video 👏 – thank you Tammy!! I have the 3rd edition of the Helen Joseph Armstrong book from ebay and 2 Vogue fitting books I found at the thrift store. The grading book would be on my Christmas wish list! Practice makes perfect should be our motto for us self-taught seamstresses! I do sewing alterations on the side, yet one day I aspire to have my own pattern line. Thanks for all your inspiration, Tammy! ❤😊

Thanks for the video.
I was just recently wondering what books I should get for making a block and learning pattern adjusting & fitting.
I’m a 52 year old male that’s interested in making men’s clothing for myself or my sons as a home sewer (not planning on becoming a fashion designer/seller/business owner/seller).
What would your books recommendations list look like for men?
Are there books you’d recommend that are focused more on men’s bloc making, pattern making, fitting and adjustments?
I ask because there seems to be so many sleeve, bust, skirt, women’s fashion related information I wouldn’t need and hope to find instruction tailored to men.
Thanks:)

You can take a flimsy book to your big box office supply store and they often can cut the spine and spiral bind it.

Bunka bodice is a really good source for basic sloper for women esp for busty girls as it has many darts.
I tried helen josep but it ended up being so loose on my bust area..

Which edition is the Helen Joseph Armstrong book since they do vary somewhat? Would really love to know.

How do you take your own measurements? I have no one around to do that.
