The final phase of a historic cleaning effort of the River Seine in Paris is taking place ahead of the 2024 Olympics.

The river has been declared a "no-go zone" due to its vast levels of pollution for almost a century.

But a €1.4bn (£1.2bn; $1.6bn) clean-up of the Seine hopes to leave a legacy of the games fit for the public to use from 2025.

Rivers should be cleaned regardless. At least they're doing it now

The efforts to clean up the River Seine in Paris ahead of the 2024 Olympics are truly commendable. It's heartening to see such a significant investment and commitment to restoring the river to its former glory. The transformation of the Seine from a "no-go zone" to a clean and accessible public space will not only benefit the athletes and visitors during the games but also leave a lasting legacy for the people of Paris and tourists to enjoy for years to come

Say what you like about Europe, but the continent has easily the highest concentration of beautiful cities on this planet, and Paris is up there with the best of them.

amazing, they did it! I remember watching another video about how unlikely it was because of all the challenges etc

The river is generally much cleaner than it used to be except for when there is very heavy rain which makes sewage overflow into the river. It should be fine for the Olympics as long as there isn't a deluge.

Well that didn't work out as planned did it?

The river should always be clean, and it should have started decades ago.

It’s very unusual to see a 20-30 year plan come to fruition. Politics often demands short term thinking around electoral cycles. Important when success like this happens to give props to the original decision makers. That way you also encourage the current generation of politicians to think long term about their legacies. So who are they?

so brilliant that residents of Paris will benefit in the aftermath of the olympics. Clean river and decent accomodation.

A most welcome break from environmental disaster coverage. 😊

It disgusts me to think they could have done this all along yet it took international scrutiny with the Olympics to finally do it.

See? It's possible. Now all other cities with rivers should follow this example.
