It's really frustrating how on the consumer side, IMAX as a term has basically been degraded to mean "big screen with loud blown out audio" rather than the full experience. You can find "IMAX" anywhere but most of the theatres/projections suck in comparison to the real deal. I've seen 3 Nolan films in 65mm IMAX and you always have to explain "no no, this is *actual* IMAX"

Just looking at that shot of the mountains in that one documentary you showed, you can see how utterly amazing the format looks. We’ve gotten somewhat close to emulating the 15/70 format digitally (most notably on Dune and its second Part which went so far as getting a 70mm print), but we’re still a long ways off from ever truly matching the 70mm IMAX look to an exact. There is truly nothing like it.

The Tron Sequel was the best Imax experience I've ever had. The sense of gigantic space and depth in some scenes was fabulous.

Very interesting. Shame there are very little theatres left actively showing IMAX its full potential

IMAX is the supreme modern format, it might have it's drawbacks like the size of the camera and how loud it is, and how expensive it is to shoot and process IMAX film but it sure pays off in the end with a supremely crisper pristine image over any other format, this is something that other formats cannot do and anything you watch from home will not give you this experience. It's kinda like a when movies of the 60's and 70's were shot on Super Panavision 70mm first only shown in certain cinemas in a super widescreen format in which television of the time couldn't give.

Being able to see an IMAX 15/70 presentation is such a treat. Especially Nolan's films since the entire process is photochemical from camera negative to print.

I saw Oppenheimer at a local theater that only has 2K imax because a friend was in town. It was good; but then I made a road trip to the full imax, and man, was it so much better. I feel ruined to anything else now.

As always, very informative and simple to understand. Thanks!

Wish I could experience IMAX laser, only have the 2K Xenon in my city, but it looks better than the standard 2K projection

I wonder if we'll ever see theater screens made to accommodate something like a 1.8x or 2x anamorphic IMAX experience. the behavior of focal lengths on the massive film plane would look insane. We've seen 65mm 1.3x but 70mm with more squeeze would be otherworldly. The 1.44 look is iconic but I would love to see what else the format can do given a proper screen.

After seeing a so called IMAX projection in a multiplex near L.A. I did understand why many audience doesn’t see a difference between “normal” 4K and this kind of “IMAX”: Because there was no! Even the sound was far away from what DOLBY Atmos delivers. So it makes a big difference WHERE you attend an IMAX movie.

@7:18 I met a guy that I can still call my buddy, that is still today an IMAX Projection Tech in Jordans Furniture IMAX Reading, MA.. He did some part time work for my IT company when I was shorthanded. I was wowed by his work there. Him handling a 600lb reel of film really amazed me

I wish home releases or imax movies would show the entire frame

I absolutely love imax I don’t understand why so many people don’t seem to care about their experince and settle for streaming movies when it’s just not the point at all. Reduces everything to basic plot with no sensory and visual perception and immersion the way a big big screen and imax can provide to really give that all-encompassing experince of “being inside” the movie not just sitting outside it watching from afar . Totally changes the entire experience

That's the trouble—I don't object to digital projection or filmmaking, but forget how niche IMAX is as a filmmaking tool; you can hardly find an IMAX exhibition house that gives you 15/70. I don't know if that's a branding sellout, a short-term patch to fund these better technologies, or what. I don't know what gets people into theaters, but a big-ass wall with a movie on it...might.

You know there is uncropped 70mm IMAX footage out there. All IMAX sequences from
the Dark Knight movies are available.

I've always thought of it as a very niche gimmick. It's nice that it's there, but it's all I can say about it
