I'm pushing 60 and I grew up in the Ft. Myers/Cape Coral area.
The areas you're showing have always been sketchy. Any metro area with a population our size will have dangerous areas.
Most of the devastation in the video is from hurricane Ian. Poor areas take much longer to recover.
As a child I remember seeing homeless people sleeping out in the open back in the 70s. We've always had them.
Have things gotten worse in the past 50 years? Of course, we have many more people.
All things considered, the Ft. Myers/Cape Coral area is a wonderful place to live.
Also: If you're hanging out in Pine Manor you're asking for trouble.

This is happening everywhere in America……..we have ALL BEEN BETRAYED…….those with power and money don’t care what color you are……they see green……..we need to take back our communities and help our veterans and homeless…….our families and our communities are everything…………

Gentrification and exploding Rents are leading to local homelessness in areas such as Tampa and Miami . As millions have moved into the State the last few years driving up prices & making the purchase of a home nearly impossible for Locals .

Very sad…used to live in Fort Lauderdale in the 70’s. My wife and I were in our 20’s. Lived there for 8 years. Got out in 1980. Glad we did. It was fantastic in the 70’s. Now? You can keep it. Wife and I are in our 70’s, still together and very happy.

Ft. Myers has gone to hell in a hand basket in the last 10-15 years. It’s so not the same little loving community it used to be.

Anyone from Fort Myers knows that MLK Blvd. and the particular areas being shown in this video have always been the rough parts of town, they were never nice … but Ian definitely crushed this area and made it so much worse 😢

To be fair we did just have a devastating hurricane that destroyed so much of our city and left trash EVERYWHERE. Many people were displaced from their homes due to it as well. it's completely heartbreaking 💔

It’s hurricane damage all right—a human hurricane!

Fort Myers has always seemed like one step from the brink to me, I never found it to feel safe but this is a whole other level. This is beyond the hurricane, this is human degression. Instead of cleaning sh*t up and making sh*t better, they trash the joint. Wtf. People are so whacked out of their minds. And the hurricane was at the end of September, 8 months ago, the fact people cannot afford to fix their sh*t is just f*cking sad on so many levels. This country is settling into' developing nation' status.

Wonder how long before people who moved there in all the new rentals decide to go back to their home state....

The last two hurricanes that hit Fort Myers were devastating. Especially the last one 😢

More and more, people don't have any respect for thier neighbors, the community or even themselves. Allowing your yard to be trash filled and house a mess on the outside is just lazy, low-class behavior. Nobody elses fault. Clean up your own mess!

It's good to see that people down in "The Fort" are trying to get their lives back together after the major hurricane that hit them..bless you all.

Same thing happened to Homestead after Andrew, it took 10 years for it to recover but it never was the same again. Most of the decent people moved out and were replaced by apartment buildings full of section 8 type renters

Moved to Ft Myers/Cape Coral area back in January 1982 when I was 19 years old. The place was an unspoiled paradise. Very few people even knew about the area. Extremely affordable housing, not-too-crowded roads & clean water all around. Used to swim in the Cape Coral canals all the time. The water around the Sanibel Causeway was a beautiful blue-green color. Now it's dark brown.

40 years later... The best kept secret paradise got found out about. Water got polluted. Roads are way too crowded and housing & homeowners insurance is very expensive.

My wife & I plan on leaving after we're finished taking care of some elderly family members.

I'm grateful that I got to live here when it was truly a paradise. Had a blast here. Bought a couple of houses along the way & raised a daughter. It was peaceful & easy living for sure. Quality of life was excellent. But progress happens & things change. Time to move on.

I've been out of FL almost 50 years now. Looking at vids on YT convinces me to stay out.
