since a few of you guys have been asking i thought i'd let you know what i'm using for now..
i have no idea what bonsai soil you should use..
there's a lot of variables to consider
1. your location, climate
2. your tree
3. you, how much do you water and how often
figuring out which soil is important and probably should be researched for a while to find what's going to work for you
if you don't want to hassle with mixing your own soil i'd
probably have to recommend brussel's bonsai soil..
you'll need to sift out the fine particles and maybe the large pieces if you're using it for smaller trees..

It's so true what you say about there is no one magic bonsai soil for everyone. I am playing around with different blends using Turface, small lava rock, and a little bit of potting soil. I've only had one disaster when I used kanuma soil for my azaleas. Turns out, you shouldn't mix it with other soils as it can cause root rot, so two of my trees died. I was so pissed. The soil package was in Japanese so I had to wing it.

Since each of us recognizes the soil that works best for us depends on our climate and the type for trees we hope to grow, It would be very helpful for you to tell us a bit about your climate, amount of rainfall and length of the dry period. If you also mentioned the types of trees you will use in this soil, it would be informative. Thanks.

I'm gonna try it out. Will it be good for a Japanese Juniper?

I've got Napa floor dry, course sand and a compost I like. I don't have akadama or lava rocks unless I spend a fortune and order some online. Here's the question...
Would a pea gravel from Menards or Home Depot be a suitable replacement? Or even aquarium gravel like Maggie suggested. I know aquarium gravel is somewhat porous, not sure about the pea gravel. Like I said before....Bonsai resources are limited up here!

Too much noise background which reduces professionalism and respect in this field.
