Only John Lawton could pull of the Heep Version and this amazing jazz infused cover. I am an avid Heep fan and I was not too sure about his addition to Heep. Innocent Victim and Firefly quickly erased those doubts.

For my taste and opinion John Lawton was the best singer ever that sang in Uriah Heep band. RIP legend

Firefly
Uriah Heep
My love lives at
The end of a rainbow
One day I'm gonna
Fly there on a firefly
High above white angry water
With a love song in my heart
Someday, somehow
I know I'm gonna get there
I've been patient for so long
All my daydreams
Seem so much nearer now
And I beg you hear my song
Firefly
On your glowing wings I'll ride
Till I sit beside
This dream of mine
Firefly, high on a risin' tide
Only want to touch
The things I've seen
Steppin' lightly from star to star
Cross a wilderness of blue
Wonderin' how much
In love with me you are
'Cause I'm so much in love with you
Firefly, can you take me
I ain't had no lovin' lately
Firefly bring me love
To my new horizon
The one that I've still
Got my eyes on, my my firefly
Firefly, firefly, firefly
In my dreams you come to me
The answer to my prayer
As I begin to feel
You warm my heart
I awake and you're not there
Now and then I see your eye
As the stars begin to shine
No rain to cool my passion
No! Not now!
No, now you're mine!

Wow I always thought Ken Hensley sang this song

А клавишник банды Лотона сильно смахивает внешне на Девида Байрона, а своей манерой игры на органе - на Кена Хенсли

Heh - John's voice is almost too good for this song. It loses that "plaintive", awkward element, which is part of what makes Firefly so special.

Don't get me wrong, Ken Hensley himself if still around would tell you John is 10x the singer Ken is (was). But there is such a thing as writing to your singer: Hensley was quite adept at that, on occasion: Who but Lawton could sing "Choices" or "Sympathy"? Certainly not any other Heep lead vocalist. Maybe Ricky Medlocke? Those tunes require a vocalist with POWER. John has it in spades.

What other Heep vocalist could get Firefly right? Peter Goalby, I think, and David Byron. Probably Bernie Shaw on the right night. Hensley clearly wrote "Firefly" for HIMSELF, and Byron was incredible at fitting himself to such songs by Hensley. "Rain", for example. Goalby could do the "awkward" bit well, and Bernie is pretty flexible when a lighter touch is needed.

Rickey Medlocke (Blackfoot / Lynyrd Skynyrd) might hit it too? "Might". There are one or two points in Highway Song where a feeling of real vulnerability comes through. But, when it comes to women... If Rickey has EVER felt shy or awkward about a woman, he certainly hides it well. (eye roll!)

Hensley, of course, "only" had Lawton, when Firefly was written. So, Hensley sang it himself, and it comes off beautifully.

This brings up an interesting question: Who then is the best all around / can do it all vocalist that Ken Hensley has worked with or Heep has had? IF Medlocke could do the awkward, it might be him. Despite their greatness(es), everybody else lacks... something.

Ironically, Medlocke is now left to play guitar (very well!) and sing backup in Lynyrd Skynyrd.

And in case John's spirit is looking down on me and frowning, I am now going to go watch his duet with Bernie on "Sympathy". Blow me away, baby! 🙂

Прекрасна песен на великия Кен Хенсли. Обичам Джони, но това не е неговата песен.
