I couldn't agree more! I really hope that Tales of the Space Age is not heavily modified, and that the Orient Express actually runs on LEGO track pieces.

I think the picks make sense to fit their existing product lines.

The space set is like a Lego Art set.

The Polaroid Camera is similar to the Typewriter as you point out. It's also nostalgic which a lot of their adult sets are.

The insects will go well with the Botanical as you also point out.

And the train fits with other Lego trains.

Wish they had picked the Steampunk ship though.

Because the Polar Express is tied to an IP, a better way for it to have a chance of winning is for it to be submitted not as “The Polar Express” but as the Pere Marquette 1225. That way is doesn’t have a copyright weighing down its chances.

8 studs wide for the Orient Express would be the best fit for many actual static model collectors. It would fit well!

As a photographer, I'm very happy about the Polaroid being approved. The train and space age sets are awesome also.
Lego did two amazing things this round: they approved four! sets, and two of them are affordable.
Hopefully lego will stay as close as possible to the original designs

I 100% agree, Lego need to respect the designs and not stray too far. We voted for them on the basis of how they looked in the original submission. If they stay true I will defo be buying the bugs, camera and space ones though. They are brilliant.

What got me in to the Ideas theme was the awesome and eclectic builds that could be put out at a really affordable price point, things like Tron, Ecto 1, Dinosaur skeletons, Big Bang Theory, Ship in a bottle, Flintstones etc all for under £100, sometimes well under £100. This meant you could get a really nice collection together without breaking the bank. Now we have Typewriter, Home Alone, Lighthouse, Grand Piano, Globe, Treehouse, Table Football and more all over £200 each, some well over! So while it's good that these insects and space images etc look to be back to the lower price point, the Orient Express is another that looks to be over £200. Basically I'd just like to see them go back to smaller affordable sets and stay there.

YES!!! My thoughts exactly with the Orient Express. I can't wait for it but I REALLY hope they keep it regular train scale

The orient express needs to be able to go on Lego track but stay bigger

As a guy who absolutely loves trains, the Orient Express set looks amazing. HOWEVER, the problem I think it will have is being able to be turned into an operating piece. By the looks of it, the drive wheels are not real and are just fake. To me it doesn't look like it would be a functional model aside from putting either a 9v motor on the tender (coal car if you don't know the proper term) or trying to fit some sort of remote control system in the tender either. The thing LEGO needs to understand about their train line of sets is there genuinely is a market out there for realistic but also functional sets.

Brick Model Railroader and other groups have made fantastic looking models, though they cost quite a lot of money due to their brick count (some being over $2, 000 by the end of it). The other thing about their models is they use non-LEGO parts in various places to compensate for official parts not actually existing. A perfect example of a failed set to me was the Emerald Night set they released so long ago now. Why do I say it failed? Well the 1st problem was it didn't even come with Power Functions to begin with and that had to be purchased separately. Not to mention adding it ruined the overall aesthetic of the locomotive. The other was the side rod issue with them constantly jamming, then owners having to refit the loco quite a bit so it would work properly and not constantly get stuck. The Polar Express set to me seems to have a similar design issue with using Technic parts as the side rods...unless that problem could be solved somehow, it would probably have the same issue. What I DO hope LEGO does with this Orient Express set is make it so it can run of LEGO track, either by having the drivers functional or a hideable way to put remote control in it.

The BMR people have done exactly this, even with their larger models, and they use a 8 stud wide standard. They took the 40 stud radius curves into consideration with most of them and worked around that limit. Yes, there are quite a few of their models that can only operate on larger radius curves, but generally I think LEGO themselves would benefit from actually making official track like that. Train guys would eat it up I'm sure.

The other sets in the lineup are rather creative and genuinely fit well as there is something for many kinds of collectors to buy. They did well with selecting them.

I will be immensely disappointed if the train won't fit on a standard track.. please don't mess this up LEGO..

Does anybody know when we will get to see the GWP's/promo's for November?

As a railfan I find the inclusion of a steam locomotive interesting, The one on my pfp is CNJ 833 which was a Pacific built by Baldwin for Passenger use first on the Blue Comet then later saw service in Eastern PA during World War II and into the 1950s.

I agree. I've been disappointed in a lot of the recent design choices by the Lego designers. I still haven't forgiven them for what they did Jazz Quartet -- The first time I saw the woman piano player I saw E.T.

Birds was an early ideas favourite of mine and insects feels similar in terms of theme. It makes me a little sad that the sea creatures didn’t get through in the target vote as I thought they looked fantastic.

The train pick actually surprised me, especially after the Hogwarts Express was just released. Hopefully it doesn’t end up being as expensive.

Not sure if YouTube auto named the chapters when you mouse over the timebar, but Lego ''Insects' makes more sense than I thought was going to be covered :D

As a Lego train fan I 100% agree on what you said. Personally I would have preferred the Polar Express. But if they make this orient express as big as the new Hogwarts one I'll be completely priced out.

Also I love the space designs and if Lego doesn't stay true to them and makes a worse model I might just go and buy the necessary pieces on bricklink and build them myself.

The problems with the orient would probably be
-the buffers being problematic when considering cross compatibility
-price
-side rods
