He's saying that, back in the day players had day jobs as plumbers and firemen bc they were paid so little, and therefore they couldnt train as much. That's why they weren't as "good"... But JJ didn't have a day job... he spent all his time working on his game, and he still ended up only being JJ Redick (a role player). So he's saying that, basically, if JJ were back then he wouldn't even make the NBA because he wouldn't even have enough time to work that hard to just be a role player. It's actually an insane diss, and accurate too.
