Easy Lead Mold | Making Leaf Mould. How to make leaf mold as a soil improver and to increase the biodiversity in soil. We are using piles of leaves for hedgehog hibernation to support hedgehog population and we are not shredding or mowing the leaves to prevent damage to the sycamore moths on our homestead.

About Us.
I share our organically managed homestead, called Byther Farm, with my loving partner, Mr J and our cat, Monty.
We are a fifty-something couple who live on a smallholding in Monmouthshire, Wales. We are going green and creating a gentler, cleaner and more healthy life for our family.
There is a large organic kitchen garden with no dig gardening raised beds and young food forest in which to grown our fruit and vegetables.
I'm currently exploring permaculture farming as a way of life.
We keep chickens, Aylesbury ducks, Khaki Campbell ducks and turkeys.

Liz I’ve watched several of your videos during the night initially out of interest for a friend of mine who wants to start living off grid. But I became really interested in your ethos and what you are trying to do there. I’m disabled myself and probably unable to do any gardening, but it’s cheered me up seeing you and I decided to become one of your patrons, it’s a #mall amount but hopefully will help you a little

What a lovely thing to do for the hedgehogs. We support the wildlife around us too and put out food for the birds every day. We get rainbow lorikeets, magpies, galahs, corellas, cockatoos, blue faced honeyeaters most days

Sadly, I dont have hedgehogs. But I do have many many toads. They live all over, in my compost, and mostly in my garden. I made little "toad abodes" and a vernal pool for them over the summer. Before they came out in spring I noticed a huge infestation of slugs, and root eating beetles etc. But thru out the entire season after toads came up, I never had any issue with garden pests. I rescued a few tiny toadlets that were in our pigs trough and its amazing how voracious eaters they are. Anyway, such a wonderful video. It's so sweet and warms the heart to see so many others wanting to help and work with wildlife instead of against. Tfs

I’ve got raised beds with 12” planks so this year I’m making hinged ramps for hedgehogs and toads.
I just pile all my sticks and branches in a big heap in corner and leave them.

What a year for fungi this has been. I even found wood blewit growing around my hazelnut tree. Easily identified as they are a beautiful lilac colour

I always leave the top corner of my garden with leaves, twigs, branches etc... It must be the home to something, I never check .
Recently, I was about to sow my broad beans under my tunnel where I had put lots of straw ... I started clearing the straw to get sowing but the straw was prickly... yes a hedgehog had made his home in there. So I made him a home in an old chimney pot filled with straw .

Great video Liz. My leaf mould video has been ready for a while but had a few others to go live first. Loved the hedgehog in this and its good you leave the leaves whole for them, For me I want it fast so supply other living areas for them. Oh new car playing up too :(

How fun to have hedgehogs! We (as a family) often rake leaves of the elderly people who live around us. This essentially helps them... and us too since we use their leaves (as well as our own) to make compost. We live in a small city in the Pacific Northwest, so our wildlife is varied...but amazingly we have the occasional deer or three, three raccoons who live in our trees, one very verbal owl, a few hawks and eagles, numerous opossums (they are not my favorite since they attack our chickens) loads of squirrels, birds and the occasional rat.😝 We had a domesticated-escapee bunny around at one point...but not really much in the way of rabbits. Hedgehogs would be fun! Happy for Huw! He’s one really accomplished young man! Excited to see where he goes from here! I’ll have to check out his book here in the U.S. soon. Hope you are doing well Liz & thanks again for the great content😊

I Liz, been watching you for a few months and I really enjoy your videos. Next year I’ll be able to collect leaves from my newly acquired property in Texas. Currently I’m living in Las Vegas and I’ve got a fantastic food garden in my backyard that my daughter will take care of

Someone has made a home in the bottom of one of my compost bins. So, with 4 feet of compost above, s/he should stay warm!

Great video. I'm currently collecting my leaves, everyday leaves appear! I have 2 large ponds. One is a wildlife friendly pond, one is for our koi. Next to our wildlife pond I have bushes that I pile leaves under, it looks a huge mess but we two hedgehogs in our garden and they are more important then having it tidy.

My sister and my daughter in law both plant milk weed for the monarch butterfly caterpillars. I plant flowers and hang water bottles for the local bee hives that are in my area. Seems like small thing when you do it but then you notice more butterflies and bees than before and its gratifying to know that your small bit has made a difference.

Thanks again for another epic video Liz, much appreciated and Hugh too. I harvested my 1st ever leaf mould in September, it was brilliant, like you, I never shredded the leaves, put them into my pallet bin, and turned it a few times over the year, and it sped up the moulding process no end! I have used it for mulch for my front flower borders, and not only all that goodness for the soil but, it looks bloody marvellous that rich dark brown colour that made me smile. The earthworms have increased 100% since adding it with other organic additions, and I feel really pleased with myself. Every thing organic is virtually free, I get great exercise obtaining it, the wild life benefits and so on like you explained. I try to encourage my neighbours to at least have a go, and it can be fun too. Less blocked drains around my area, healthy dahlias and roses in my border, wild life improves, what more could I ask for? Thank you ever so much again Liz for your inspiring and encouraging video(s) Keep up the fantastic work,

Regards Cliff.

Hedgehogs are definitely cute and I am pleased they are increasing where you are

Last year, for the first time, I started some leaf mold by raking my neighbor's trees. This year, my trees are big enough that they are supplying me with an adequate supply (although we can always use more). In California, we don't have hedgehogs. What I do have are skunks, raccoons and opossums, which unfortunately do not help my garden. I do encourage bees of all kinds and butterflies and other insects by planting flowers and veggies which are particularly attractive to them.

Adorable hedgehog! I don't think we have those in California. So far I just have rats and squirrels, and maybe some skunks. Opossums if I'm lucky, they at least eat ticks. Raccoons are cute, but, well, I hope they'll make their homes further into the wilderness. Good on you for giving the hedgehogs a home. Leaf mold is on my list this fall, at this point trying to banish the bamboo moving in from the neighbor's yard, maybe I'll get in a leaf heap there when I'm done. Love your channel!
