what many ppl miss, the flag in the 3rd verse he bought home, the only one he trusts, is in fact the "Flag white as snow" from the fallen girl.

The fact that most people think the song is some sort of homage to veterans is actually hilarious. It's a critique of how distorted the view of patriotism is in America, and how far a person can go on that premise.

I didn’t get the Vietnam vibe from this, I got more of the war on Iraq vibe from it especially given it was released in 2008

To those that don’t know, this is an anti war protest song. The story the song tells is a true story of a solider that went to Iraq and his experience with war.

Being that I've been to Iraq, in training they emphasize if someone is coming at you, regardless of gender, age, size, whatever, and they refuse to stop when u tell them, you are to shoot them cuz they could have a bomb strapped to them. So the third verse where the girl keeps coming at him and he kills her, only to find out she had a white flag in her hand trying to surrender brings me to tears every time cuz even tho I've never had to pull the trigger I can't begin to imagine the fear, indecision, anxiety, emotions that a person would go thru in that situation. This song is too real for me and definitely hits home.

This song is actually anti-war. This song is saying that young Americans that have nothing else get baited into joining the military by recruiters by telling them “just carry this gun, you’ll even get paid” and that they can see the world. When in reality they find out the horrors of war that come later in the song. This song is actually humanizing the man who is the “enemy” that they take away with the bag over his face, by saying he is taken from his family and friends. The woman at the end is then holding the white flag, who the soldier takes as a threat and shoots and kills. The whole message of the song is that in the beginning he is admiring the American flag and is going to “fight” for his country, but by the end of the song he realizes the white flag, or the flag of truce and peace, is the only flag that he loves and the only flag that is trustworthy to him, not the American one. Not a hateful comment, actually love most of your content. Just a clarification on what I believe the song is about. Peace and love ✌🏼

Very emotional reaction. I really couldn't hold back the tears. Rise Against is one of my favourite bands and has always been because of the messages in their songs and how HUMAN they and their lyrics are. War is never the answer. No matter where no matter what. War is damage. War is death and blood.
We are all brothers and sisters no matter where we come from. Love to all!!

As a Iraq war veteran, this song hits hard. People want to congratulate you and are genuinely thankful, but they don't see what actually happens. This video covers only what about 10%-15% U.S soldiers actually do and few have seen the outside of their bases on deployment.

Here’s a story: an 18 year old boy gets sent to Vietnam. He tries to get out, no such luck. He gets dropped in the middle of nowhere. Bullets ripping by, a little walks towards this boy. She can’t be more than 13. She’s keeps walking toweds him, he starts looking down scope telling her to STOP, STOP, STOP. She presses on and within a close proximity her stomach blows out. This young boy drops his gun, scoops up her guts and puts them back in. He cradles her and starts running for miles until he feels he’s in a safe zone. During this run he just felt a warm sensation in his lower body, but adrenaline and fear keep him going. He looks down and the girl died in his arms. That warm sensation was him shot in the lower back.
He comes “home.” He gets off that plane and is spit on, called a child killer and society throws him away. His own country does nothing to help him with his PTSD, injuries, but they gave him a free burial plot. This now grew up a bitter, heart broken, scared, angry old man. He would scream in the middle of the night, just swinging and crying. He held his atrocities in. Two people really knew, his best friend who endured the same atrocities and a young boy who wanted to know why he was such a piece of sh!t.
When he’s sat me down and told this to me my face just streamed with tears. I understand him and why he was a piece of shit to me. I felt his pain in ways I didn’t know was possible. And he hugged me and said I love you. He also said “ Charlie they still won’t give a fcking metal.”
You never know someone’s story until you ask or listen. My heart goes out to all those men and women who serve and fight and fight other peoples fights. I see you!

I'm an atheist, and you are the only aggressive Christian I give my time to. Thank you for being intelligent and I will never shit on your beliefs. Stay positive.

My grandpa told me this about war: it dosen‘t matter how the other guy is talking, or looking, or for what they fight, they brave men, all of them. And that he had no problem with does he had to kill.. he did it, to survive, but if the choice would givin, he would‘nt go the same way again, because they told them, they gonna fight for freedom, and they gonna change the world.. and the only thing changed was even more hate.. and even more war‘s and less freedom around the world..

We don’t fight for the people, or our country, or our flag. We fight for our brothers to our left and right. And that will make me fight for a lifetime.

There is a message in this song, that you either missed or didn't want to talk about.

Very emotional and we truly do not treat are soldiers right. they are often given horrible orders in times when they are unnecessary, but having said that i do believe war serves a purpose and is often the only answer that can defeat and prevent a worse evil from prevailing.

You completely missed the entire point of the song. How dense are you?

Being former military I love this song. But would I go back and change my mind about joining. No I wouldn't, I joined for my family to insure that they can enjoy the life of freedom

I request this song, don’t get me wrong I would never take anything back from what I did I love all my brothers and sisters I love this country and always will, but it has taken a mental toll on my life and have struggled ever since, I just wish everyone would love everyone and that there can be peace 🤘🏼 (I know it’s not Memorial Day related but it’s all I could think of)

I was just an aircraft mechanic in the air force there are much more dangerous jobs out there with a lot more at risk than what i dealt with. I hear we've failed our military so often and i agree but i believe that combat veterans deserve so much more. If there were things in my field that goes unnoticed and go thankless i know for sure their field is much worse. the military is why I'm pursuing a clinical psychology career now because there has to be more done for those who have done so much for us.

I spent many hours back in the early 80’s freezing my ass off in a B52. YES I WOULD DO IT AGAIN.
