Thanks Jason - great intro, particularly the history of some standards decisions which helps embed learning. Really good starting point for anyone getting into synthesis.

1:06:35 - bashing 0-based indexing isn't getting you nowhere, sorry. It would be better to just alter your explanation. "Channel 1", "Channel 2", "Channel 3" etc are just monikers, nothing more. If the MIDI designers labeled them "Channel A", Channel B", "Channel C" etc, that would probably avoid all this confusion, but it's best to just explain that they are nothing more than labels. It's not about squeezing an extra channel into the MIDI spec, it's about not wasting a scarce resource for no good reason and back in the '80s, resources like that were scarce.

Disclaimer: you guessed it, i'm a programmer by trade. Great tutorial btw - wanted to learn some fundamentals before i start looking into a C#/.NET MIDI library and this is perfect.
