The brade is never used for cpc & used to prevent interference but earthed down at one end.

If it was earthed is the braiding capable of carrying the fault current without becoming damaged .

Does it need to be earthed? Mechanical protection only.

Few years ago i saw some glands for this sy metal inner with a earth tag point and a spring clip ..you roll the brade over the metal inner and put the clip on .. and its earthed !.. never been able to find them to buy .
Standard sy glands are crap .. trs gland and sleeve the brade & connect to earth ..
Job done.

Why is this cable even used so much in the UK.
In my country a shielded flex lead is only required when there is high freq interference at play like driving a motor with a VFD.

Did you check other end? Only needs one end for connection in theory

It’s not an earth it’s to stop noise. I only use it for inverters

SY isnt a poor mans swa. Its a control cable, and if you're using it for power applications you probably aren't meeting 7671. Read the Eland cable statement on SY, CY and YY for more details.

no code, its not armoured or being used outdoors. . so why would it need to be?

Always been told not to bond it. Even when i did my AM2 i was told not to as its not actually used as additional protection. Never actually bothered to ask the NIC, or see if its mentioned in any of the regs tho. Would be interesting if someone has seen it mentioned though as clarification would be nice.

Nobody has ever bonded the SY braiding!! I was the only person on my job that had even seen an SY gland, .let alone fitted one

C2, hasn't been glanded right.
I disagree with the primadonnas, used correctly cy, sy and yy are all fine for their intended use
They might not have a BS number but they're in widespread use in commercial and industry. I honestly don't know why manufacturers haven't just come out and had them tested

Had this issue on our job where this cable was installed on tap off boxes feeding ceiling lights.. we were paid to rip it all out for pvc flexes...
What i scratch my head at is if it doesnt have a BS number or EN number (whatever) and therefor shouldnt be used, then why is it still available.... ?
My local carwash had an upgrade to new machine and when im using it and sitting there in the car looking around as you do, then why can i see what looks like SY has been used...
Or is it a similar type of cable that is approved... im happy to be educated by others with more knowledge than i so i know for future... 😊

I will only need earthing at one end, what have they done there?

One of the worst cables out there, AC lads favourite, I found some feeding and AC unit on a roof and the clear pvc had completely perished as there's no UV protection and all the braiding had separated . And FG glands used as usual.

If you used an SY cable on WWTW jobs although it was rare to do so you had to earth the braid at both ends as well as have an internal earth core CPC as it was mandatory in their specifications, failure to do so meant it didn't get approved / signed off
