Bernard “Pretty” Purdie, world’s most recorded drummer, has worked with some of the greatest artists in history, including James Brown, Aretha Franklin, Herbie Hancock, Dizzy Gillespie, Wilson Picket, and Steely Dan, to name a few. His unique style is so often imitated, that he even has a groove named after him: “The Purdie Shuffle.” This beat can be cleary heard on classic tracks like Steely Dan’s “Home At Last” from the iconic album Aja.

Purdie’s performance and concert were filmed and recorded live in high-resolution audio and video at TELEFUNKEN’s purpose-built microphone testing stage and laboratory. TELEFUNKEN had the exclusive unique opportunity to have Purdie break down his famous “Purdie Shuffle” groove, while capturing the performance exclusively with TELEFUNKEN microphones. In this video, Purdie gives a beat-by-beat explanation and demonstration of his famous shuffle, breaking down the independent parts and offering a fresh take on his funked-up creations.

TELEFUNKEN mics featured on this exclusive session include: The M82 on kick and M80-SH on snare from the Dynamic Series., The TF51 on toms, TF47 outside kick, and TF39 Copperhead Deluxe on center kit from the Alchemy Series., the M60 on cymbals and snare, and the ELA M 260 in a Decca Tree configuration from the SDC Series, with a pair of C12s on overheads and a pair of ELA M 251E as room mics from TELEFUNKEN’S Diamond Series.

****************************************************************************
The LIVE FROM THE LAB live music video series is recorded and filmed at TELEFUNKEN Elektroakustik's facility in South Windsor, CT. Each session is tracked live exclusively with TELEFUNKEN microphones and features unique performances from a variety of local, regional, national, and international artists and ensembles.

The multitrack audio files from these sessions are available for free download via clickable links below the individual performance videos. All audio files are presented in .WAV format and were recorded at 24bit / 48KHz sample rate. They are clearly labeled in the same format with the source listed first (LEAD VOX, ACOUSTIC, PIANO), followed by the microphone used (C12, AR-51, etc.) and can be downloaded and imported into your Digital Audio Workstation of choice.

I've had the honor and privilege of playing with Purdie for the last 35 years or so. His is the deepest pocket I've ever encountered. God bless you, Bernard.

This is not a drum class, this is a sermon about drumming! You can feel the energy, you can feel the attitude. I could listen to his shuffle all day long, almost like a guided meditation.
Incredible drummer.

This guy has more grooves than a fresh set of tires. More pockets than a trench coat.

Get the shuffle on a loop and just see how many different bass lines you can write to it. It's endless.

Dont get me wrong, gospel chops are awesome, blast beats and fast playing are impressive, jazz grooves are amazing but this this is why I still play drums and have done for almost 30 years. My favourite drummer of all time, and anyone reading this who plays and has never tried to nail the Purdie shuffle....when you do try, it will make you realise actually how amazing this legend is. I've been practising that groove everyday for 3 years now, and have only just started to get a bit 30 and I still wouldnt be any where near as smooth as Bernard hahaha!

Remarkable. This is a drumming genius. His work with Fagen and Becker is incredible. What a treasure - 9 minutes plus of this and not a single beat less than perfect.

Nobody plays like him, absolutely amazing... I love progressive metal drumming, but nothing can beat an honest Purdie Shuffle.
