For over 35 years, the #1 rule when purchasing any sort of clothing from any thrift store is washing the clothing in the washing machine with a decent laundry soap like TIDE or GAIN before wearing it, including denim jeans or underwear. And, if the clothing items from the thrift store has to be washed by hand, classic DAWN blue dish soap and hot water is a very good way to go. For it is gentle on skin and tough on odors and dirt.
