Metal School - Icon

Originally formed in 1979 as Schoolboys, the Arizona metal group eventually known as Icon isn't one that comes up a lot in conversation. Even though they have two highly regarded '80s albums, they still get overlooked in part because of touring and promotion. An untimely departure of singer Stephen Clifford would also lead to their second album, Night of the Crime, losing traction before it even got started. However, with much of the original lineup playing together again (including Stephen), it seemed like a good time to take another look at this awesome band. This is a short one but I think you'll like what you hear. Come check it out!

The second album you can put any song into just about every classic 80s movie. That album is fire.

I live in Phoenix. Heard “On Your Feet” on the radio in ‘84 and holy crap what an incredible album. Listened to it a lot. Still do. Got Night Of The Crime when it came out. I started playing guitar in late ‘85. Fast forward to ‘89 I got really good at rhythm guitar and needed somebody to teach lead guitar. Called a guitar shop in Scottsdale and accidentally found John Aquilino teaching there. I spent a year taking lessons from him and one day he said “I’ve got nothing more for you.” To be able to take lessons from somebody you listened to and admired and then he tells you that you’ve reached a level where he sends you on your way was a fantastic experience. To this day I still speak of that year having the biggest impact on my playing. He’s still in Phoenix and I got to briefly talk to him when Icon opened for Tesla in 2008. I still try to find him just so we can talk and I can have him listen to music I’ve written over the years. A couple of years ago I met Dan Wexler as he walked into a place I was working. He’s a cool dude.

Icon and King Kobra. The two best bands of that era IMO. Stellar songs and musicianship.

What a coincidence. I was listening to night of the crime literally an hour ago and then I saw this video. Every cut is simply 80s perfection. The guitars, base, drums, keyboards and vocals are just sweeeet. It's just one of those albums that is timeless.

One of the most underrated bands of the 80's. Really awesome, awesome sound, especially in their first two albums, IMO.

I’m ashamed I never knew this band before I watched this video. I bought their entire discography and I’m now a huge fan. Thank you!

All they needed was a music video for Night of the Crime. They should’ve made it.

I bought Night of the Crime on cassette tape way back about 1985 or 1986. I used to listen to that tape a lot. For some reason, one of the songs from that album popped up in my head last night, so I searched for it and found it on YouTube and it brought back so many memories of my teenage years. I still love that album. Thanks Metal School for making this video!

Sorry the debut album is a MASTERPIECE of 1984 and the talent they showed is much better than any band in the 80's. These guys should have been a household name
