0:38 "and why are we so bad at learning other languages?"

Who is "we?" Americans?

This is easily explained. They're not any better or worse than anyone else. Imagine the US were like Europe in this way: Every state speaks a different language. If that were the case, the percentages would change. Europeans can't even understand each other. Americans mostly speak the same language thus the need isn't there to learn other languages. It isn't practical and if something isn't practical, it won't be common. Why learn German if you've only heard German in person a few times in your entire life, for example.

As an american who speaks french spanish and dutch, I must say that she completely approached language learning here in the U.S. in the wrong way. We aren't worse than other countries at learning languages. We simply do not have the need to pick up a foreign language so most don't. It's not a necessity here. The only language that would be useful here is Spanish due to the large Latin presence.

I have an american cousin who totally freaks out when she sees me and other family members speaking a shit load of languages. I can speak Portuguese (I'm originally from portugal) and english in a perfectly fluent way, i can also speak french and spanish quite well, and i know a bit of italian and german too. I have family members all over the world (especially Europe) so i speak all of these languages when I'm with them. And my american cousin just stares at us all the time trying to understand all of the languages, because she can only speak english.

I was born in Chile.
No es broma, It was for me a complicated problem to recognize that when I traveled for 4 years of my life, mi vida cambió al completo.
Para los que lean esto, ser Bilingüe (Bilingual) it's more difficult than I thought.

1:27 that is true for me. I was taught Vietnamese and was fluent for only a year. My parents later taught me English and that became my main language. I almost completely forgot how to speak it and now learning from the basic once again.

This is a great video. But it would be even better if it were captioned for people who are deaf or having hearing loss or are learning English as a second language. Thanks!

0:29, come on. 53% is more than half, but you curve the line between the two towards the 53%?

1) English is our official language. We don't need to learn others to communicate with each other.

2) Almost all Americans take another language in high school. This is often a requirement for graduation.

3) Most of us never use that 2nd language again because English is our official language.

4) Most immigrants that come here do so because they want to be American. All 16 of my great-grandfather came here in the 1800's and learned English, and didn't pass on their own languages to their kids or grandkids. It's called assimilation, and it's what you do when you love the country you moved to.

5) You can't just generalize about people because we're all different.
