Is a Stock VW MK8 Golf R Fun to Drive?

I have a 7.5 golf R I’m having a tough time with it “I like drifting in snow” and the new 8 is a very good deal right now I might trade it in.

The Mk8 R is definitely a vibe, and its a hoot to drive in stock form. I have a 2022 MK8 R, with the Racingline turbo elbow & inlet pipe w/ a drop in performance filter...and I love driving this thing IMO its so silly what VW did this go around with programming & tuning. Its seriously a FUN car to drive especially if you hit the back roads which I do daily on my commute to & from work....I had a 2015 GTI before this Stage 1+ tuned, Springs, DB mount, rear Antiroll bar, Wheels & tires, Intake....and that was a fun car to drive also but I had to invest a few $$ to get it there. The MK8 R is that plus, from factory.

Got my Mk8 GTI SE DSG new back in August 2022, and I’m considering picking up a Mk8 R or waiting for the Mk8.5 R. Not sure I want to trade my GTI, I may just keep it and have both. This video was very informative from a daily driver perspective and I need that. The R is definitely a vibe, but so is the GTI!

I drive a mk6r and it’s a blast to drive. It’s stg 2 with some suspension mods. Stock for stock I found it way more fun than a mk7 gti.

Mk8 Golf r has a completely different awd system the 8Y S3 (Haldex) does not have. It’s the same as the 8Y RS3’s awd system w/ a torque vectoring rear differential

Totally agree with your great insightful review. Ive luckily owned one for 15 months now and totally agree with all your points, its a great capable all round 'vibe'. Understated but not to those who know which is perfect. I dont know what else i would get for similar money.

I love my mk8 gti se. Love the r but the gti fits me perfectly. Mk8 is totally a vibe too 👍

I recently drove a mk8 GTI it’s a lot quicker than prior gen GTI. The powerband is more linear imo compared to the Mk7/7.5, where you have to ring it out. I can only imagine how much quicker the Golf R is.
Right now the 380 edition GTIs are an absolute steal given you get DCC and a lot of Golf R hardware for under $35k
