The echo plus hub is only Zigbee, doesn't support z-wave that is 95% of installed devices today.

Yes, the Echos (and in fact any similar device i.e. Google Home) have limited utility if you don't want to do home automation, like quick news/weather updates on demand, have other service subscriptions such as Sirius/ XM, or have a disability that makes hands-on input difficult or impossible. Other than that, these devices are just a novelty and you shouldn't waste your money. Although your phone can do these things to some degree I've found that the "always listening" attribute invaluable and in fact necessary for the functionality. The only thing I see in these new products is the EchoPlus' integrated hub. Maybe a reason to upgrade from my DOT but not right now.

Note to Lauren, try not to say 'as you might expect' so much when doing your hands ons. Pretend the audience are coming in at the product raw, also repetition is bad in *any* YouTube video. Hope this helps.
