Shramana Sarkar is a geology graduate student who works three jobs to afford the rising cost of living. Her rent in St. John’s has doubled. Groceries are 20 per cent more expensive than they were two years ago, according to Statistics Canada. But her wages haven't kept up, and Sarkar says she is barely finding the time to study.

The 24-year-old is part of a growing number of precarious workers in Canada. These are workers who don’t know how many hours they’ll get in a week or if they’ll be employed next month. Sarkar says if rent and inflation remain this high, she’ll have little choice but to leave Canada.

Massive increase in interest rates mean people don't buy. If they are not buying, they're renting. Add in a massive increase in population without any real plan to build the homes and other supporting infrastructure needed, you are asking for a rent-plosion of biblical proportions.

This is the lifestyle that has been forced on immigrants in this country.
Immigrants can't no longer keep up with the staggering rise in the cost of living.
They work hard but the Bank of Canada is devaluing their hard work by printing more money, cutting the rates to record lows, and creating massive inflation.
Constant dollar devaluation has been destroying the middle class in Canada for over 2 decades and sidetracking and crushing the immigrant class.
The housing crisis is the direct outcome of the Bank of Canada's wrong monetary policies over the past 20 years.
Printing money and cutting rates have led to poverty, misery, injustice, inequality, crimes, violence, family breakups, sprawling tent cities, homelessness, hopelessness, anxiety, debt, the constant decline of standards of living, and being dependent more and more on food banks.

Bank of Canada has caused deep pain and suffering to the middle class, especially the hard-working immigrants.
Canada is in desperate need of a New Central Bank, to help the middle class flourish and to set the standard of living in the country, and to bring hope for young people and immigrants in this country.
The skyrocketing home prices are the ROOT CAUSES of these ongoing crises.

Home is life's basic necessity and not an "Investment Commodity".
"Investing in Real Estate" in Canada must be BANNED for decades if not forever.

The ongoing housing crisis is a "Direct Challenge" to Canada's Social, Economic, Political, and Security establishments.

It's interesting how the CBC likes to focus on international students... meanwhile native born Canadians are struggling to feed their children.

And still, people will never blame central bankers... They will continue to blame politicians, corporations, unions, landlords, etc... But never the central bankers. 😞

Just stop giving students visa to anyone. If you don't have money to study and for accomodation. Do not come to Canada 🤷

This student, did it say if she was a Canadian student or an international student? If she's international, she shouldn't be working but should have been able to pay for everything or be ineligible as international students have to be able to afford everything before coming.

We’re making landlords rich at the expense of everything else in the economy. Gov’t must get directly involved in building housing. Private developers are perversely incentivized to build less than what’s needed.

Oh, boo hoo. They make out that this is such a terrible thing and that it should be easier to get what you want. As if people in the past didn't have to struggle. EVERYONE struggles. That's part of the journey.
