The Attack of the Dead Men, or the Battle of Osowiec Fortress, was a battle of World War I that took place at Osowiec Fortress (now northeastern Poland), on August 6, 1915. The incident got its name from the bloodied, corpse-like appearance of the Russian combatants after they were bombarded with a mixture of poison gases, chlorine and bromine by the Germans. While coughing up blood, the Russians covered their faces with cloths and managed to rout German forces. Russia won this War

Explanation:The Attack of the Dead men, took place on August 6th 1915.Near the Osoweich Fortress, the Germans get ready for battle. they released a deadly gas with a mixture of chlorine and bromine. One Russian soldier saw the gas coming to them. When the Russians saw, they had no Gas masks. They would use cloth to covers their noses and faces. Some can't and used water instead. But others are left to get the items they needed. Their lungs and skin started burning away. The pain skyrocketed. After that, the Germans came to the first trench and second trenches. They saw the devastation. As they approached the reserve trench, they saw what is like a ghost figure. And more. One German soldier dropped his gun and ran away. Lt. Vladimir Kotlinsky used all his strength to capture all the trenches. He captures the first trench, bayonet in hand. But is struck by a bullet on his side. Men pass by him, charging on ahead. One Russian soldier dragged Kotlinsky to safety. He is badly injured and unable to fight. He sees Lt. Wydisław Streminsky, a brave Polish sapper from one of the companies. He calls out to him. He salutes his commander to continue the attack. It turns into a battle to the last man. After the attack, the Russians were forced the abandon the Fortress two weeks later.
Lt. Vladimir Kotlinsky died from his injuries during the evening of the attack. Under his command he had rallied the remains of his and another unit and led them to charge at the right moment and time. He was posthumously awarded the Order of St. George 4th grade for his valiant actions that fateful day. He was just 21 years old when he died. Lt. Władysław Stremiński was awarded the Sword of St. George for his bravery during the attack. He continued to serve and suffer many injuries throughout the war, but he survived and went on to become an influential artist in Poland, his homeland. He died peacefully on December 28th, 1952.
