Learn about examples of WIC food packages and the benefits that come from participating in the NYS WIC program!

WIC provides 2 main benefits to participants. Food benefits and non food benefits include. Non food benefits include meetings with a nutritionist at least every three months for nutrition education, breastfeeding education, and anticipatory guidance. Prenatal and breastfeeding families also have access to certified lactation counselors, peer counselors, support groups and breast pump assessments. Basic health screenings are also completed during appointments for immunizations, blood tests and iron. Nutritionists will also provide referrals to outside health and social services as needed. Some examples of these referrals are Medicaid, FoodStamps, Food pantries, early intervention, and smoking cessation programs. The participants work with their WIC nutritionist to tailor their food packages to what their family needs.

We have a baseline package that includes whole grains, fruits and vegetables, beans, dairy and additional protein sources like eggs and fish. Through the health and nutrition assessment, the nutritionist and family will work together to customize the packages based on health concerns such as allergies, intolerances, family preferences and accessibility to safe water, refrigeration and cooktops.

Here's some more examples of food packages. This one is specifically for infants. The main tailoring for infant food packages is the amount of formula received. A fully breastfed infant won’t receive any formula, a fully formula fed infant will receive the WIC maximum formula and a partially breastfed infant will be given formula on an as needed, basis based on the amount of breastfeeding that is happening. At six months infants will be able to get infant cereals and infant foods. You'll see that fully breast fed infants received meats as well. This is to help ensure adequate iron intake at 6 months. Formula fed infants do not receive meats as all WIC approved formulas are iron fortified. These are some examples of food packages for women and children. These packages are supplemental and intended to add extra sources of key nutrients like protein, iron, calcium and vitamin C. Fully breastfeeding women have access to the largest food package that also includes fish to help promote breastfeeding and support nutrition for both mom and baby. Milk is often a concern, if participants do not want or cannot tolerate cow’s milk other options include Lactose free cow’s milk, soy milk and other substitutes that can be reviewed with a nutritionist.

Under certain circumstances WIC can provide ready to use formula and juice boxes. A WIC nutritionist can determine if anything else on the WIC food package needs to be tailored.

Whole milk will be provided for children at one year of age until their second birthday. Only under circumstances where qualifying medical condition and a nutritional supplement is prescribed by the doctor can WIC provide whole milk after the age of 2. WIC can offer 1%. Milk, lactose free milk or soy milk. Other options can be discussed with the WIC nutritionists.

Contract formula versus exempt formula. For WIC contract formulas are standard formulas that do not need additional documentation to issue to infants. For exempt formulas a medical documentation form is always needed. Medical documents are needed in any of the following scenarios (listed on the slide - Medical documentation is required for:
• Infants 6 months or older with greater amounts of contract formula in lieu of infant foods.
• Infants and children with exempt formula
• Children with contract formula needed past their first birthday
• Children and women with infant foods
• Premature formulas may be provided to premature infants up to their corrected age of 12 months.
• The need for Ready-To-Use formula will be addressed by the WIC Program and discussion with health care providers as needed.
).
