How Long Will mrekk Stay #1?

As of today, it's been almost 900 days since mrekk became the rank 1 osu player. Little did anyone know at the time, but we were witnessing the beginning of the greatest peak reached by any player in osu history. Some would even argue that because he got so far ahead of everyone, the competition is completely displaced and that "there is no competition for rank 1" anymore. Ironically enough, with players like lifeline and Akolibed setting high valued pp plays, the gap between mrekk and 2nd place on the osu rankings has been narrowed to the smallest gap it has ever been in more than 2 years. There are even some talks of when someone will overtake mrekk for the top spot on the osu rankings, but when exactly will that happen? What does overtaking mrekk on the osu rankings entail, and is it even possible in the near future?

there's never going to be another player that manages to hold such a dominant spot on the rankings, because well, even if they make #1, they'll still have to compete with Mrekk.

I don't really understand why people want Mrekk be overtaken because personally I want the opposite. We have never had a dominant player get to number 1 before Mrekk and then consistently keep pushing themselves to hold it for as long as they possibly can. Previous #1 players have either taken extended breaks or just stopped playing high PP reward maps. To me it's much more interesting to finally see a #1 player who isn't just giving up on the game and is still trying. If anything I think it would be even more interesting if Mrekk genuinely farmed as much as he possibly could.

i kind of find the current situation more interesting than players competing for #1. The current situation has us watching how long mrekk can actually keep #1 instead, which means seeing him improve more, therefore pushing the skill ceiling even higher

Accolibed just... came and not only skipped 1400... 2x in the same week... but then he casually skipped 1600 going straight for 1711. increacing the pp record by 25% within a week and dropping mrekk pp lead to 700 pp.

This video was before akoli set records but I would like to add that mrekk said on stream yesterday that even if akoli surpasses him he will grind speed and come back to #1. That's the mindset people who follow the top players have been wanting since the start of the game. Try to keep it, if you lose it try and get it back. Don't quit w.
