I have an SE and grabbing it as opposed to 5s is a wise decision. The 5s is simply just getting older and the SE is also a great device for this getting into iOS without spending a lot of time and money determing if you like the ecosystem. I have since grabbed me an 8+ because I like it's form factor and Touch ID over the X...
