In the war times we used a similar lamp. Kerosene oil was scarce with all other essentials because of the Sri Lankan government sanctions.
We rolled paper like a straw and used as wick instead of cotton rope. And added bit salt inside the kerosene so the the flame pull oil more economically.

That bottle sling knot is so cool. Whole thing is so self sufficient and clever.

We used to make these in the Philippines. We experienced a lot of typhoon while growing-up with blackouts that last a few days to months. Funny thing was, we used used oil from fried foods. When there was nothing to eat, we just let the lamp burn smelling like pork, put a little bit of soy sauce on a cup of rice, then bon appetit!

I am liking every post I'm coming across so far. I cannot begin to describe just how damn fascinating your tips have been. I don't even spend much time in the wilderness, but it seems much more appealing now just to try these tips out myself. It looks genuinely fun!

Solid oils like lard, ghee or bacon fat also work. I like to use cotton mop head strands for my wick.

ALSO in antiquity, people would fill a seashell with oil and just lay the wick in it with the lit end just lying up on the side. No wick holder necessary.

Good idea, I do this for a long time but I had problems lol, the only oil I had was the one in tuna cans so I put them together and find a Wick, it was very dark and needed to walk like 5 miles, it saved my life at first but at some point I was hearing noises and when I turn around I was chase by a pack of raccoons so I trow the lamp and run like a mother pucker, I was there in 8 minutes flat so yeah don't use any oil that the animals in your area like. Please be careful with this one guys.

The string he hung it with is very flammable. Don't hang it from anything you don't want to burn. Better yet use a nice strong wire.

Much more importantly, heat stresses and heat differentials can make these jars explode.

We used to make these but they were always treated with respect and caution. They caused more than one accidental grass fire.

If you remix this, small metal paint and glue cans are very handy, and gallon paint cans are great for carrying the oil and cans.

Im a real big fan of this for some reason, especially the whole using water to float the oil if you dont have much trick.
