Owning an Air Source Heat Pump (ASHP)

This video chronicles a homeowner's experience of getting an ASHP installed, and getting to grips with how to live with it.

There are lots of things in this video that I wish I'd known before the installation began. People are happy to install equipment, but not to take the time to explain how it works and how to use it. I've made this video for myself, really, to help me make sure I finally understand enough about my ASHP. If it helps me, maybe it will help other people? That's why I've published it. I'm not a vendor, nor am I someone trying to develop a YouTube channel that I can monetise. My motivation is to do what I can to encourage the uptake of green / renewable energy solutions in a domestic environment.

Excellent. Little in the way of anything I didn't already know but you've provided yet another shell with which to shoot down the wife's objections. Thank you, thank you, thank you 👍

I applied for the boiler replacement scheme via Octopus Energy in August 2022 and the application was accepted a few days later. I've had all the required ECP and asbestos surveys done and the planning application was submitted in January 2023. We're now 17 months into the process and we've been waiting a year for our local council to approve the installation. We've had council representatives attend to conduct various other surveys but the process is incredibly slow and frustrating. Thing is, our current gas central heating system is faulty and we've had heating engineers advise we need an entirely new system. With that in mind, if our council does not give us the green light to go ahead for the ASHP installation, I'll be installing a new gas central heating system.

nice video - clear, calm, concise, and well presented. You may be able to estimate financials for gas if you can get kWh heat generated for heating and hot water (ideally separately but not essential). If you only have kWh used but also have SCOP you could work back from that to get kWh heat output and then estimate gas as 1.2x that (assuming 80% efficiency)?

4 or 5? I have been quoted 3 at best. Just what can one believe?!

I have this pump. Sadly its very noisy, both the fan and compressor. Especially when ice builds up. SCOP was around 2 when it's 0-10 degrees celcius which is quite bad.
