I've used my Magic Eraser sponge and it works well. Best when your iron is warm, not hot! You'll get steam burns if you do. Also wipe residue from the sponge off the iron.

Using a wooden toothpick on the iron while the iron is still hot also works. I just gently scrape off the gunk once or twice a week. It works great and doesn't damage the iron.

I use sos pads and it works every time. I used to use alcohol, but it just wasn't doing it for me.
