So that other character glitch in story mode actually happens randomly when you go to the character selector. It says you are some random jedi and from there you can access the character menu and play as anyone. It only works once for that level though.

For future series you could consider something like what Sovern Gaming did with TCS with minimum button presses, how many studs, etc. That could be cool as well

Your patience truly is akin to that of a Jedi. Congratulations on conquering this mammoth task! I imagine I'd want to give up pretty quickly, but something tells me that feeling of accomplishment would definitely be there and make it feel like the effort was worth it. In terms of the glitch you found, I actually found this glitch myself (just didn't have a channel at that time to post it on) What's even more interesting is (unless it has since been patched) if you go back to a previously completed level in freeplay complete it then go to an unplayed story mode mission, you have access to all the freeplay characters... IN STORY MODE!
