You see Americans. Magpies don't come at you. What they do is they give you a warning when up close. Thats your cue to run. If you don't, they call thier magpie noughbours and repeat the same action (curb your enthusiasm theme)

I love em. Its the Male Maggies that swoop.
I've only been swooped once in Ferntree Gully Melbourne and I went back a week later, talked to the male maggie and we were friends, never swooped me again.
Its how you engage with them as to how they react to you.

I've heard it said, you never hear the bullet.

But for a split second you hear that distinctive wingbeat of the approaching magpie just before it pulls away or actually makes contact with you.
SWOOP!

When I was a postie, 4 months a year, particular streets of my run had nesting magpies. Im not joking theyd chase me mailbox to mailbox, basically any time the bike moved. Theyd actually get my helmet quite often, and even clip my neck. Eventually I started wearing a hoodie under my helmet to protect my neck a little, and just tried to do those streets quickly. I tried hitting one with a newspaper after it clipped me 3 times. Big mistake, it just got angrier lol.

They get used to you if you're a local and don't swoop.

Except the one that got me today, and another a few weeks back, multiples times, here in Melbourne's south west, body slammed me, then pecked at my head (wearing a cap), then hovered around my head, trying to rip my ear off, after it couldn't get to my eyes. These birds aren't small, and pack a real punch, and that beak is as strong as steel. They're friken nuts.

How is he so calm?! Such action usually results in screaming, yelling, swearing and running faster than Kathy Freeman.

You had to wear the same dgk to have it happen again?

I feel this is not a true representation of getting swooped by a magpie, in my experience anyway. There should be more cursing and fear for one's life. 😰

Magpies usually swoop to defend their territory and males swoop passersby to protect their eggs

I had one just come in my yard right next to me no fear
