Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday Original Guns - Museum Exclusive

The name Wyatt Earp is synonymous with justice on the American frontier. Earp was a peace officer in various Western towns, including Dodge City, Kansas, and Tombstone in the Arizona Territory. He nevertheless found himself on the opposite side of the law on many occasions. Not surprisingly, Earp owned many firearms during his lifetime, including this Single Action Army. After his participation as a lawman in the Gunfight at the O.K. Corral, a thirty-second altercation that has come to symbolize the struggle between legal authority and banditry on the American frontier, Earp was charged with and subsequently found not guilty of murder. Earp's reputation was tarnished during his lifetime, but accounts of his Western exploits after his death revitalized his image. Today, he is remembered as an icon of the American West.

Again, as far as I know, historians have found no evidence that Wyatt ever had a 'Buntline' beyond circumstantial evidence in Colt's shipping records, and it is believed that author Stuart Lake made the gun up in 1931. A few people were quoted that he had a "Long Barreled Colt", which could easily have been the 7.5 inch Single Action Army that was very prevalent at the time. The one existing photo of Wyatt holding a gun shows him with a 7.5 inch SAA. Search Wikipedia for 'Colt Buntline'.

The S&W is one that was left by Earp when he was in Canada. His gun was handed in for security reasons while he was on a ferry and he never claimed it back.

There is some debate as to which gun Wyatt would have carried that day. What IS known is that prior to the shootout Wyatt was presented a S&W Model 3 .44 New Model American by Tombstone Epitaph editor John P. Clum as a gift. The only real reference we have to Wyatt carrying a "Buntline special" was in Stuart Lake's biography. "Wyatt Earp Frontier Marshal" But Wyatt himself never publicly claimed he used this weapon.

Some of the prettiest engraved pistols are at the Texas Ranger Museum, Waco TX. Been there twice, stayed until closing.

From everything I have read none of Earp's gun(s) have ever been authenticated. There is no mention of Earp EVER getting a Buntline special. That is something only mentioned in the 50's TV show. Pure fiction.

You're right, I should clarify: there have been a couple different shotguns attributed to Holiday, one was a cut down shotgun set up to be worn under a coat with a short sling, and the other was the standard factory coach gun that you describe.

They should be in a museum located in Tombstone. LA has nothing to do with anything.

Thank you for the information and I'll look into it and let you know. Years ago I was watching the news and the people who purchased Wyatt Earps home in Oakland (I think) were remodeling the attic and discovered his Buntline and Holster wrapped in an oil cloth beneath the floorboards. I have been intrigued since then about what became of them. If I find ou I'll get back to you.
