The fragment about Putin having the well-being of Russia at heart got under my skin at first, but then I thought again. On one hand, it's hard to reconcile this view with escalating repressions against his own people and sending the troops as cannon fodder. On the other, you gotta understand the historical perspective of power structure in Russia (both Soviet-era and many centuries of tsardom before). Russia is the prime example of what Feliks Koneczny called Turanian civilization. Having certain similarities the Byzantine ideas of social order, Turanian civilization clearly distinguishes between the state and the people. Moreover, the ruler effectively *is* the state. In light of this it could indeed be argued that Putin is doing what he deems good for Russia, but it's of little solace or value to the Russian people. Beware of applying Western notions to Russia directly. In Poland we joke that rather than being a country, Russia is a state of mind. It makes a funny meme, but it's much more real than one might think.

The balkanisation of Russia is high on the wish list of our oligarchs. Think of all the lovely countries like Irkutsk or Samoyetsk with no leverage on the world stage, ready for exploitation by our noble elite. In this sense Russia is a commonwealth, protecting many nations within.
