Keaton's portrayal is iconic and gave the character the needed gritty characterization of the late 30s and 40s. A true homage to the origins. The dark gothic environment helped. Jack/Joker slaying Thomas and Martha in the 1989 film will always be the the stuff of nightmares. Napier's distorted voice and wicked grin makes him come off as a demon from hell. Even Joe Chill was stunned.
