I have found many of those carved bowls in massive boulders along with obvious monolithic stacked boulders on Kauai Hawaii. Nobody thinks anything of them here. When the Polynesians discovered Hawaii, there were indigenous people already here, about 500, 000 of them. The Polynesians called them Menehune (commoners) but they called themselves Mu.

There are thousands of stone constructions across the earth from Briton, France, Europe, Asia, the middle east, Egypt, Japan, north and south America, parts of the Pacific, in fact, they are found and continue to be discovered in just about every country. The construction shapes vary from blocks, walls, pyramids, circles, temples, buildings cut in mountains, and even spherical boulders. Many of the constructions have astonishing geometric shapes, no one can really explain how they were built, the alignments, the mathematics involved, how massive stones were moved, or who built them Although the age of many or most of these constructions is often debated and largely unknown, some have geological evidence for very advanced age. It is not inconceivable that similar constructions could exist in New Zealand i.e. walls made of massive stones (Kaimanawa) or spherical boulders. In fact, to adamantly state they don't, doesn't fit with the pattern in the rest of the world. Sadly most of the comments here focus on race and color! which has absolutely nothing to do with stone boulders.

I guess people can knock what he is saying if you think you you know better.I for one think we are kept in the dark about who was here first .Not that it matters but it does kill a lot of theories as to who came here first. It is all about the dollar at the end of the day.

I particularly like the ancient Maori paintings on the ground. I marvel at how they kept the yellow lines so evenly spaced.

There are bowls honed into rocks at fairy falls in the waitakere ranges in Auckland, many beautifully made at the waterfalls at bottom of track .They are made into the bedrock .My father Rex Hill and family went there often ...Mark Hill here from Kelston Boys High - i went camping many times there with Lawrence Wigby and Paul Cottar, Stefhanie Walker and Janine Mudford ....always we stopped and pondered these man made bowls -i thought they were for making dyes or such ...best time of my life wandering thru the waitakere mountain ranges -awesome place, miss Piha, keri keri beach heaps..

This man is one of NZ most respected and highly qualified historians, resident at Chch Teachers College training NZ history teachers for many years. He knows his stuff. Solid evidence v maori folklore may be uncomfortable truth but he presents strong arguments. Well done Barry.

I've seen exactly the same types of markings on stones in Scotland. There are also curious alignments and arranged stones on top of Banks Peninsula on the crater rim. I'm amazed no-one has noticed them, some of them line up perfectly with where the sun goes down behind the Southern Alps on the solstice.

I don't really agree with his assertions but the mystical origins of the Maori people are incredibly fascinating. Some iwi were already here, some came from an unknown homeland. Some definitely made it all the way to South America in such antiquity that they lost the memory of it except in legends.
The ariki were akin to druids, magical priests highly in tune with the spiritual world. Able to do things seemingly super-natural. Holders of antedeluvian knowledge and masters of the stars.
The acknowledgement of the pledian star system in Maori culture is another fascinating aspect of this as its such a commonly noticed system in UFOology.

There are a lot of holes like that in boulders on the coast and in river beds - caused by pebbles rolling around in the current.
