Tesla is about to have a recall of 158,000 Model S's and X's on their hands after the NHTSA is officially requesting a recall. We talk about that as well as some other Tesla news.

Recalls only occur when the recall is cheaper than the lawsuits which may arise.

Do most people think of a recall as “bring your car back and get a new one”? I have always thought of recalls as being your car they fix whatever is wrong and give your car back to you. Like that toccata airbag a few years ago

I was thankful that you posted this video. I have fought with Tesla for months over these exact issues on my 2017 Tesla Model X. The failures are often to the point where I no longer wonder if it will happen, but when it will happen. I believe that any Tesla Engineer who rode in my car would scream and throw their diagnostic tests out the window. I was preparing to hire an attorney before this announcement.
I used to think that early adopters who put their faith in Tesla would be taken care of. I now longer believe that. I have had it.

As a Tesla owner and drummer, I watched the video and did not feel compelled to mention the shirt. I did think ‘cool shirt’ but that’s it... surprised how many mentions the shirt received over the comments. Great video and glad I have a 3!

Tesla did send out an email in late November stating that at the time, it wasn’t a recall, but Model S customers may be subject to refunds for costs associated with MCU repairs. The email was sent to me a couple of weeks after I was forced to upgrade my MCU due to a reoccurring issue even after the ECU was upgraded.

The easy way to cover this is to offer a lifetime warranty on the affected screens. This way, the workload is spread over a longer period of time, flattening the curve. Some of the affected vehicles will be put off the road for other reasons and will not require the fix as a result.

I had to bring in my model S 3 times due to this (after only owning it for 10 months and 12000 km) and they fixed it only after getting a lawyer involved.

All companies make very calculated decisions on these types of defects. They don't just do what you would like them to do ;)

There was a video a couple of years ago, which I can no longer find, of group that could de-solder and replace the Flash chip on dead MCU. I think it's the guy from Ingineerix, but it was on someone else's channel. Maybe Rich's. Point being, this issue has been know for a long time, and caused by over writing to the Flash chip. I believe the video said that it was writing Linux logs to the Flash chip needlessly. Not sure how accurate that is. Although I'm still plan on getting a Tesla, this MCU issue and they way Tesla has dealt with it has really deterred or delayed me from purchasing. How may years before the Flash chip in the Model 3 and Model Y ware out. I'm happy NHTSA is forcing Tesla to recall the MCU. Even thou I'm an investor and it might hurt the stock a bit in the short term, I think it's the right thing to do.
