I worked with a guy for years and never even knew he was a Vietnam era Navy Veteran. He was a real nice guy, a great worker and never mentioned his service. Later, when I went to work at the VA, I ran into him again. I was able to assist him with getting much deserved VA benefits. Turns out he was on the USS Forrestal in 1967 when there was a horrible explosion and fire onboard. Also turns out he got several commendations for his acts of heroism during that ordeal. He saved many lives. While working for the VA I learned that most of the real heroes just never talked about what they went thru.

When I was a kid, everyone's father had either been in Korea, WW-II or both. These men never said a word about their service and in fact, it's been my experience that the guys quick to tell the best stories are always full of sh1t.

Thank you everyone who has served. I was never able to serve because of a bad car accident that messed up my back when I was younger, but I have a lot of respect to all who have served in our military.
