The original song "Sweet Marie" dates to 1893 with music by Raymon Moore, lyrics by Cy Warman, not as I had previously found elsewhere on the internet. My thanks to YouTuber "baqaqi" for correcting my error.
I uploaded Percy French's parody on this song a couple of days ago, not at that time knowing the original song.
I have since found the original song's lyrics and present the song here.
I did find an old scratchy 78 version by Ada Jones, but it was too indistinct to hear it properly.
Irene Dunn and William Powell sang a few lines of the song in the film "Life with Father".

Here then is my interpretation of the song for which once again, I have made up my own chord progression.

I was doing research for my ancestry blog on Cy Warman's son, John Bryan Warman (married a distant cousin, Mary Carter Landis) and I was so glad to come by this. Unfortunately, in my research, I discovered that Cy and his inspiration "Myrtle Marie Jones" were in the process of divorcing two-years prior to his death in April 1914. In the newspapers, she cited the reason for leaving him was because he had an "ungovernable temper" and "failed to suppy us (her, their three sons, and daughter) with common necessities. And oh, of course, there was the mention of another woman that he was having an affair with -- also named Marie. He also wrote a beautiful poem about her as he took her to board a ship that she was soon to be sailing on. It put a damper on the song/poem for me. The lyrics and music are printed in numerous newspapers. I would have clipped them for you had I known.

I love this song - just watched the film last night (for the 700th time - lol) My grandmother used to sing this song - according to her, it was about the Blessed Mother.... Not some pretty town girl named Marie....

The gentlemen you cited DID write a song called Sweet Marie, but not THIS Sweet Marie. They were born at least fifty years to late. Sigh. I've been trying to find info on the song ever since I heard snatches of it in the movie "Life With Father". At least now I know the lyrics! Thanks for that 🙂

Excellent threelegsoman. I'm sure there's more than myself wondering who sweet Marie is.

Nice to hear the original, but I prefer the parody!
